Vice’s Intonation Festival

Posted by HANNAH LEVIN at 11:44 AM

Virtually every summer music festival trumpets its “diverse” or “ecclectic” line-up, but the reality is that a mix of big-name draws and more obscure acts can often have as much (or more) to do with a promoter’s budgetary constrictions than an honest endeavour to create a truly unique blend of genres. This doesn’t seem to be the case with Chicago’s Intonation Festival, scheduled for June 24-25 in Union Park. The curators at Vice magazine have understandably included acts from their own label like Panthers, the Streets, and Bloc Party, but they’ve also taken care to book such seemingly disparate artists as Def Jam darling Lady Soverign next to the angular piano fetishists in 90 Day Men, along with scheduling a reunion appearance from metal midwives Blue Cheer and a rare performance by the often-evasive Roky Ericson. Someone really should send a Stranger staffer there to cover it (cough, cough).

Boredoms!

Seadrum/House of Sun was not the triumphant return I had hoped for after such a long hiatus (in fact, i hear that it may not have even been a new recording...), but any chance to see them play live is a gift.

I think the pitchfork one looks better. didn't Intonation used to be pitchfork's anyway?

3

Maybe you didn't hear about the founder of Vice writing in a major conservative political journal that one of his company's primary goals is pushing conservative politics to the hipster demographic? Witness Vice's many articles bashing feminism and multiculturalism and their penchant for fag/nigger/jew jokes.

"OMG it's ironic, it's not like they really MEAN it, you uptight PC queer!"

5

Great line-up or no, Chicago in late June = yuck.

Audrey: Late June in Chicago = yuck? Why? Because the weather is perfect, the beer is cold and the Lake is at long last warm enough to dip your toes in?

7

95° and oppressively humid does not make for a good live music experience. At least, that's not my idea of "perfect weather."
