A Pox on Ani DiFranco

For me, listening to Ani DiFranco has always been about as appealing as eating gruel while sitting in a corrugated tin shack in the middle of nowhere—while wearing a burlap bodysuit. I can’t fathom why she’s so beloved. DiFranco has another album coming out August 8 titled Reprieve—and what an ordeal it is to endure. Can anyone explain the appeal of this woman’s unfeasibly popular, libido-killing, blanched folk music? Because I’m stumped.

Come on Dave...corrugated tin shack in the middle of nowhere... eating gruel while wearing a burlap body suit. You just described our bud John Rambo! And what was NOT to love about Rambo-First Blood? : ) DiFranco's music has no redeeming qualities whatsoever.

Obviously, you were never either a lesbian or a 15-year-old girl. I swear, when I was in high school, she spoke for me. And to this day, the audience at her shows skews highly dyke-a-rific. But besides that, she's an amazingly talented guitar player and she's got a really unique voice and delivery.

That being said, she's too prolific for her own damn good. I swear she's released an album a year since 1992. I stopped trying to keep up before I even left my teens.

So Ani's cornered the lesbian/teen-girl demographics…
I think I'll just hold my tongue and let that thought marinate for a while.

I got twenty bones that says Segal makes the jaunt out to Redmond when Ani plays Marymoor Park in August. Purely out of journalistic curiosity, of course.

how much bets there's enough yeast in that cooter of hers to make bread for years.

i bet it's all itchy and she hates it and that makes her sad cause she hates herself so she writes music about that and when guys are like is that a song about her yeast infection she's like you don't understand women i hate you so much and i'll write songs about how you totally suck and how i'd rather munch carpet but not tell anyone and then write about it in my secret diary and write a song about that too!

does anyone smell bread?

Wow, such hostility. That's cool if you don't like her music, but give her some credit. AFAIK, she's the most successful songwriter that's always been indie, she's an amazing guitarist, and incredibly hardworking and prolific. Also, her lyrics are damn good. Despite her tendancy to get preechy with her political views, she uses words very efficiently. One stanza, and she's established the setting, the major characters, and the backstory.

Most people I know are familiar with her earlier stuff, but for later CD's, check out Evolve. It features a few great Seattle jazz musicians, and has some of the coolest and most creative arrangements I've ever heard on a folk album.

I guess bashing is the price she pays for success. I for one can't wait until I'm successful enough for the Stranger music writers to get annoyed enough to bash my music.

we're not bashing her success. we're bashing how played out she is in every arena.

she's trying to be this proto(nuvo?) hippy/feminist singer/songwriter and it's already been done (and much better, thankyou)!

now it just comes off as whiney and self indulgent.

she wonders why no company would pick up her stuff and release it for her, she wonders why she had to go start her own label, it's 'cause everyone whose not a teenage girl, dyke, or snag wouldn't go near that shit if it smelled like roses.

honesty may sound callous, but sometimes the truth hurts.

sheesh

it amazes me how harshly some people judge musicians by their fanbase. it's not exactly always their intentions.

FYI ani difranco is married to a man. she, like many people of our generation, felt the need to expand her sexuality beyond the normal borders. a foreign concept to the stranger?

you all have tin ears. she is a fantastic musician and songwriter. not for everyone, but neither is most of the stuff you all shill for...

Actually, she married her sound dude and then divorced him a few years later and is now back to courting the ladies.

I—a staunch vegan—will eat a 72-ounce yak steak before I will do that.

You Stranger fucks are hysterical. Trashing Ani DiFranco on one hand and then coming all over yourselves for Hall & Oates on the other.

I'd hate to have breakfast with you folks: No pancakes, just syrup. No coffee, just sugar. No bacon, just fat.

Newsflash: The Stranger is composed of many individuals with differing tastes; it isn't a monolithic entity expressing what you may consider a "consistent" stream of opinions and critiques.
