The Early Scoop on Decibel’s Lineup

Posted by Dave Segal at 05:31 PM

I spoke with Decibel festival director Sean Horton (left in the photo) at Montreal’s Mutek last week (more on that fest soon, I hope). He revealed some of the artists who’ll be appearing at the electronic-music event’s third edition (happening Sept. 14-17). Check Decibel’s site for info updates.

ALEX SMOKE
THOMAS FEHLMANN [DUB SET]
TELEFON TEL AVIV
TAYLOR DEUPREE
SUBTLE
GREEN VELVET
FUNCKARMA
APPARAT
DEXTER
TIM XAVIER
RICHARD CHARTIER
DJ CAMEA
RANDY JONES [AMBIENT SET]
NORTEC COLLECTIVE/STATIC DISCOS SHOWCASE [w/ Panopticon, Fax, and others]
FOURTHCITY SHOWCASE

And here are some acts to whom Decibel has made overtures: Bola, Daedelus, Francisco Lopez, Alex Under, the Dead Texan (Stars of the Lid side project), Ryoichi Kurokawa (one of the stars at this year’s Mutek).

Three (3) words: Full Access Pass

2

looks good so far, but...

here's my wish list:

ellen allien
vitalic
justice
mylo
linus loves
matthew dear/audion
the knife
simian mobile disco
munk
alter ego
digitalism
shit robot
john starlight
tiga
etc.etc.etc.

3

Subtle? Twice in one year? ::swoon::

I second FITS on The Knife, Mylo, and Tiga.

4

i third the suggestions. decible could get sooooo much more attention if it were a little more populist with the playlist and less navel-gazey, idm, head noddingly...dull. Sorry guys. but so far there;s not a single perosn on that list i would go out of my way to see.

i would also add erol alkan and alexander robotnik and dj i-f and.... the list goes on.

but maybe decible is supposed to be just for the elite. what do you think dave?

5

Decibel aims high, yes, but it isn't elitist. You should've seen the masses at Neumo's going crazy to Thomas Fehlmann and Isolée last year.

There are plenty of clubs and fests catering to mainstream tastes. Decibel prefers to spotlight more innovative artists, and the organization excels at booking musicians of various styles and levels of accessibility. For its limited budged, Decibel does an amazing job.

The suggestions in these comments are fine and I'm sure Decibel is considering many of them. But there are several factors that go into booking such a large festival, and artist availability and performance/travel/accommodation fees play a major role in whether these folks can be booked.

But, hey, if Green Velvet is too elitist for you, then I don't know what to say.

6

green velvet is one of the exceptions so far, and i'd love to see isolee again. why doesn't he come with his mate as alter ego this year?

if there are so many "clubs and fests catering to mainstream tastes" why haven't we seen a majority of the list fits came up with, or the list from the other day on line out in seattle-ever?

we've never had these folks come to town. usually it's just lame trance/tribal dj's that play those stripper/hooker bars downtown (medusa, or whatever it's called now, eg.) or it's tommy lee from motley crue (who actually doesn't even spin the records, he just stands up there winking at the ladies). i think we'd just like some quality DJ's and musicians who are no less creative merely because of their popularity.

i think there's a difference between aiming high and completely ignoring a whole side of the dance electronic music community.

Oh yeah! and to fits' list i'd like to add

SPARKS! Someone pleast bring SPARKS!

(now that's what i call completely inexeccably eletist! but good fun none the less!)

7

a. Isolee has nothing to do with Alter Ego, that's Roman Flugel + Jörn Elling Wuttke (discogs is your friend).

b. alex smoke is amazing and very accessible, head over to http://www.bleep.com and check out his new album Parodlia or whatever it's called. look online for his livesets too, cuz he does a great job twisting the album versions in to something new everytime.

c. who needs more mainstream electronic music? do you get all your electronic music from the dying flesh at KEXP? the more experimental the better, keeps the fake-ass Eastsiders on their side of the bridge and the even faker-assed cap.hill indie fucks at the cha cha and out of our hair.

d. if Fehlmann is half as good as he was last year, it'll be massive.

e. would love to see Deadbeat again

f. agree with 90% of FITS list. Mylo can suck my balls though with his played out shit, as can the other "safe for the indie rockers to like" dj's and producers like Justice and Errol Alkan. good for about 15minutes then you realize you're surrounded by a whole room full of people you hate.

8

i missed fehlmann last year and am still kicking myself over it. i heard it was just out of control good. hope his dub set is as fun.

i think decibel does a fine job, and i'm impressed with the effort and ambition they put into this fest. In no way were my suggestions anything but friendly.

i don't know that a lot of Eastsiders are rocking out to Justice or Mylo, Kitchenstinks, but maybe I'm wrong...

9

wow! kitchenstinks you make the dance community sound REALLY cool!

yeah! let's not invite anyone we don't like to our party! cuz they, like, suck, and stuff! we professorial types need a place to chill and smoke our pipettes and act all fey!

how about this, if you hate them-don't go to them. wow! a revelation!

KEXP has NEVER played any of the groups listed above, unless it's at 2 in the morning when we're all in bed. they have just as much an aversion to popular artists as do you.

all the mixes i've ever heard from alkan and justice have been tight and...wait for it...fun. a big difference between them and the twattle that is most idm.

oh, and excuse me about the isolee mistake, perhaps it's because of this poorly written sentance from the forced exposure site:

"Western Store (isolee's new cd) underlines this theory. Compiled by one half of Alter Ego and Sensorama, Jörn Elling Wuttke, Western Store includes a range of 12"."

it doesn't explain that he has no direct relation to isolee.

usually a group does their own comps. sorry stinks!

10

i did drift off on a little tangent of hate there so apologies for that. i'm just skeptical of these indie-approved dj's like Alkan/Justice/Munk etc. who are the current flavor of the month. I'd rather see Chicken Lips/Emperor Machine.

11

i've seen chicken lips and they aren't worth it. (seriously, not jibeing you again ks, they weren't that interesting) but emporer machine would be fun!

also would be good to see rong music folks and kelley polar quartet. his album was tops on my list last year. and apparently his tour is quite good!

12

for the love of god...

DETROIT GRAND PUBAHS.

I'll be buying a FAP (lol) either way.

13

agree about Kelley Polar. would pay top dollars for that as long as it's live and not a dj set. support from Morgan Geist and Danny Wang appreciated. someone book that show, like..uh..NOW!

14

Hate to say this, Jizosh, but Detroit Grand Pubahs were totally embarrassing at Mutek. E.g., their lyrics and stage demeanor were utterly retarded and the music wasn't funky enough to compensate for their scatological idiocy. They infantilize George Clinton's steez and leave out all the wit and genius musicianship of P-Funk.

15

Man... I love Green Velvet.

16

they had me at green velvet. holy crap is he an entertainer.

and i second jizosh on the detroit grand pu bahs. i've heard the mixed reviews from mutek, but i'd still rather see a failed idiotic scatological p-funk homage than a successful boring live set (which is not meant as commentary on the lineup as it stands).
