Last night's Os Mutantes reunion show at The Moore was amazing, better than I dared hope. At various points the concert felt like a chaotic run-through for a demented Las Vegas spectacular, a production of Godspell on brown acid, and...

It took 'em a bit to get the sound ironed out (the keyboard's vocals were extremely loud at first), but after that they just nailed it. And Rita Lee's fill in? Wow. Big shoes to fill and she fit in them snug.

Accurate review, Kurt.

Despite a few songs that struck me as too corny and campy (spot on with the Vegas allusion), Os Mutantes flared brilliantly. My favorite parts were when they ventured into baroque psych-prog territory; the 10-strong band created an unbelievably lush, dense sound. They were instrumentally tight--esp. the percussionists and guitarists. I had no idea Sergio was such a guitar god. He peeled off some amazing rococo solos and wrung some mad fx that I'd never heard before. "Bat Macumba" was magnificent, but how could it not be? It has one of the best rhythms ever, combined with one of the greatest chants ever and is embellished by one of the most awesome distorted guitar motifs ever (last night it sounded like a fucked-up motorboat).

Os Mutantes joined Gang of Four and Slint in the pantheon of reunited groups who not only weren't embarrassing, but rather were transcendent.

Respectfully disagree. The band was fine, but the sound was terrible--all vocals and keyboards, guitar too low, drums nonexistent, bass alternating boomy or inaudible.

AFter all the raves I'd heard about this band, I was expecting something more intense, transcendental, experimental.

Not from where I was sitting in row L. I could esp. hear the percussionist on the left very clearly.
I could also—thankfully—hear Sergio Dias' guitar very well.

Where were you sitting?
