Brang It Did The Coup & Common Market

Neumo’s “ Sunday 8/6. Pictures and such to see.
The Coup came and overthrew. To Neumo’s the Oakland funk was brought. Seattle was the last show of their tour. Boots Riley preached and pranced with his usual lyrical surgeoncy. Yes, surgeoncy. Surgeon + urgency. Boots operates. He cuts, and his message is urgent.

The Coup are touring to support the Epitaph Records release - 'Pick a Bigger Weapon'.
Boots says, "The people who make up the laws are lying to us all, constantly. We can't let em." On hand was a group of volunteers, who had been traveling with the band, and their mission is to teach people how to get the army recruiters off campuses.
Boots' band was tight and huge. Guitar - Steve Wyreman, drummer - Quebec Jackson, bassist - Ricole Johnson, and vocalist - Silk E.

Wyreman trickled out jazz chords under a Boots rap and lit into his solos. But they were guitar solos that made a statement, and were tied up nicely in the end. And drummer, Quebec, threw spitfire, roundhouse, inhuman solos, while maintaining correct flow to the essential funk aorta. Silk E is a Mary J in the making. A little diva tornado, she sounded like the whole choir.

A highlight was the song, My Favorite Mutiny, "I ain't rockin' wit you / Your logic does not compute / Death to the pigs! / I spit street stories till I taste the pavement / It's my favorite, it's my favorite, it's my favorite mutiny."
For the encore, they were joined by Seattle Sax Man, Skerik, who has been touring with Les Claypool. (The Coup had opened a number of Claypool shows.) With Skerik, there was a Coup variation on some "Fresh and Clean' Outkast. The show ended with a 30 minute instrumental funk super review. Boots got a box of Coup cd's stood by the door while the band jammed. I think he personally said goodbye to almost everyone in the room. It was a great great show.

Common Market played before The Coup. This was their 5th show with them. RA and Sir Sabzi heated up the crowded crowd with profundity and interplay. Instead of Outkast, they went with Outfield, on the sample. "Josie's on a vacation far away." Uh, very far away - to hip hop training school. And when she "Comes around to talk it over," she will be stocked with sounds drained through the Sabzi filter " funk defined and full.

RA engaged, pontificated, and navigated through the hedge maze of his lyrics to the center. Someone in the front row was on their cell phone, holding it up to let the listener hear what they could of the Common Market set. RA took the phone and walked around on stage with it, giving the phone a bird's eye view of the onstage sound.
Maybe the person on the phone was calling in from Hip Hop Training School to listen to 2 of its finest graduate protégés making good on a Sunday night. Because it was good Common Market made, and lots of it.
Diggie Dang.
Common Market plays Bumbershoot Sunday, September 3rd, at 5:30 on the Bumbrella Stage.
They also play at The Paramount Theatre with Michael Franit and Spearhead - Friday, October 13th.

Thanks for actuall reviewing a show! You guys tend to tell us about shows that are coming, but we never hear about them afterwards. Not everyone catches as many shows as you folks who get to go for free, SO we count on people to fill us in. Thanks for FINALLY doing that. Maybe some other line out bloggers can start doing the same thing. Instead of ridiculous discussions about "favorite frontwomen" and "personal theme songs", write about stuff that is actually going down.
Uh, we've reviewed many shows.
What you consider "ridiculous discussions" happen to be entertaning and thought-provoking for many readers.
My sister and I went to the show and were very pleased. We had a delay in our plans to go back to Florida and decided to go to the show. It was one of the best shows I have been to in a while. I had never heard of Common Market before and I loved the energy the brought to the stage. Plus, who was that DJ they had? He was one of the best dj's I have ever seen do a live show, except for the big ones like Jazzy Jeff and DJ Premier. We have been to many hip hop shows in Seattle and have never seen a dj hold it down like that guy. He played all the good music and got the crowd to sing along with him. I was truly impressed. Great show.
That's DJ Sabzi. Yeah, he's filthy.
He also DJ's for The Blue Scholars.
No - I think Daniel was talking about the HOUSE DJ - that was DJ Indica Jones - he was playing old school cuts all night between sets and was getting people to sing along. It was great.
Oops, my bad, you are right, House DJ - Indica Jones. He's filthy too.
"entertaning" s/b entertaining, obv.
Indica Jones is a great DJ and also the creator of Iller clothing - check it out - www.illerclothing.com
close to 600 paid at an all ages show on a hot august sunday night. the scene is definitely blowing up...

Trizzent!!
Excellent review. Excellent pictures. You are just the man, man.
The show was way off the hook. It wasn't even close to being on the hook.
"while maintaining correct flow to the essential funk aorta."
Put it so right.
That guy was an amazing drummer.
Sabzi's on a vacation far away. Sabzi can pull my tabzi. I love Sabzi. and I love fro envy.
spengligga = speak english nigga
Great review, and some nice photos!
"I love to laugh, love, fuck, and drink liquor." - Boots Riley
Me to.
Does anyone else think that Boots Riley looks like a fatter, more funky Terrance Howard?
Yes, I can see it.
Right on....dope article
Thanks for the comments and thanks David for letting people know about Iller....Good looking out. Iller is much more than a clothing company...it is a worldwide movement....
And as always, it is such an honor to preform with Common Market. I have been a fan of Ra and Sabzi for a few years now and I dig what they are doing. This show was very special to me and I have to thank, Meli from Obese for letting me get down with these talented cats.
I also really liked "beyond reality"...they had some dope beats, sick flows and really brought a new flavor to the hiphop community...good stuff I say...
CM was truly dope....I really dig that Saba is using rock samples in his music....Myself, I am an old fart that has been rocking out for years and am always stoked to see cats like that take it to another level....I tend to play a lot of rock in my club sets and it was dope to see Saba do that. Plus, Ra is such a talented MC, it's sick....so cheers to CM, for keeping this ish real....
Now, The Coup.....I have seen them a few times and Boots always brings the good stuff...Be it, this was his last show on a long tour and I am sure he wanted to get back to his family...he still brought the heat....a really amazing performer and cool ass cat to Boot....lol
so all in all, I really dug the show and had a great time...thanks to Mariangela too for hustlin' all that Iller gear at every show...big ups on that...
and as for the rest of you...I'll see you soon, either rockin' the 1's and 2's or burning up your cd player...cause ish is about to be set on fire....One
t daddy, another excellent sketch. thank you!! you are my favorite stranger resource.
