End of the Buju Brouhaha?

Posted by KEENAN BOWEN at 02:24 PM

I just spoke to Tracy Moody, owner of Studio 7, where Buju Banton’s cancelled/rescheduled show was held last night. According to Moody, there was “no violence, no protesting, nothing at all like that. We have reggae shows here all the time, and honestly, it was the same crowd last night that it always is… If you want the gossip, there it is. There is none.”

Moody did tell me that he asked Banton to sign a statement saying he wouldn’t perform “Boom Bye Bye,” which Banton did sign, without incident (and I suppose now the debate will become, is that censorship? Or was Moody just looking out for the well-being of his employees and patrons, in light of the current climate). At the end of the night, Banton shook Moody’s hand and thanked him for his hospitality.

I’ve yet to hear any reports from actual show-goers. Does this account sound about right?

Line Out contributor Donte Parks went to the show and will likely be posting soon about it, with, we hope, photos and video footage.

See what could have happened?

A peaceful end to all this b.s. with Banton coming away a little more informed and enlightened.

Instead, we had one side dictate the debate, without giving the person at the center a chance to speak.

Nice work Nanny Pollice.

Yup, that account is spot-on. While the controversy was the topic of many conversations, most people were there to have a good time, which they did. I heard more passionate gripes over the fact that people had to wait outside before the performance (they had to clear out the earlier all-ages show) than I did about "Boom Bye Bye."

5

I'm sure all of this warm's Neumo's heart.

thanks keenan.

Thanks for doing a little legwork and, well, reporting on some of the unanswered questions.

Any chance you could get on the horn with the management at Neumo's and confirm that they will indeed be paying the 15 large for breach of contract? It has been suggested by some folks familiar with the ins and outs of the music industry here that since the show was in fact only moved, and not cancelled, Neumo's will not have to pay that $15,000 cancellation fee they were talking about before the new venue was arranged.

I'm trying to get that information.

9

Actually, there were two protestors/activists there; I was one of them.

Screw the thinly veiled anti-gay posters. If, say, Johnny Rebel came to the CD to play his music, you know it'd be a media shitstorm. Such a musician probably wouldn't make it past the door of any venue in King County, so it'd never happen. Which shows just how different the relevant issues are treated.

The posters bitching at Stranger over this incident place gays and their rights at a lower social importance. You know who you are, and we all know you're full of crap.

11

Yeah but The Stranger's offices aren't located in the CD.

You forgot about that part. WE don't care what happens outside Capitol Hill, homophobe.

12

Why would you not care what happens outside CH, ESYGH? It's not like all the GLBT people are segregated into a "gay ghetto" - they live all over town. Um, some may even live outside the City Limits. It's that sort of attitude that just plays into the accusations of NIMBYism charged by the "let the Bigot play" contingent.

Unless of course, it was meant to be ironic; the irony & sarcasm has been flying so fast-and-furious the past few days, some of it has sort of blurred on the page.

Neumo's talent booker Steven Severin says he should know by Wed. how much his club lost due to the Buju cancellation. However, he can say now that it won't be $15k, as initially feared.
