As many others have pointed out, the issue here is that it seems at least on the surface very hypocritical for the Stranger to call for the boycott of one artist for being homophobic while supporting other artists with similar beliefs. I'm a big fan of the Stranger, and specifically Charles, but the Slog posts on Buju seem like nothing more than grandstanding. It's sad that good people had to pay the price for this grandstanding that resulted in nothing more than getting the show moved to a different part of town. Hypocritical, harmfull, innefective. Not exactly a good look for the Stranger this week.

What's more, I've never labored under any sort of delusion that Axl was anything less than a batshit crazy bastard with questionable morals. That doesn't distract from the enjoyment I get out of his work (see also the oft-cited N.W.A., the sexist caricatures occupying Greg Dulli's early works, and the countless metal bands that I champion).

It shouldn't surprise you that the writers at this paper have differing opinions in regards to both politics and musical tastes. Trust me, if we had to reach consensus on every post we put up on Line Out or the Slog, we'd never get around to putting out a print issue of the paper.

A great thing about this slog is also a bummer about it. On one hand it allows everyone to have great access to the differing views of the Stranger writers, very cool. But on the other, when it is used as something to call for a boycott, that call has the weight and influence of the whole paper behind it, like it or not. So while you did not openly agree with Charles' call for a boycott, neither did you disagree, which leaves your readers to believe, correctly or not, that this boycott is something supported by the Stranger in whole. If you disagreed with Charles, it would have been good of you to enter the debate and given a voice to the other side. You have to admit, Charles started what ended up being a rather personal attack on one of the most decent guys in the business, and you did nothing to defend, which is sometimes as much as contributing. The Stranger does a lot of great stuff for the music community, and it deserves all props, but itis not above being held accountable when it does something that directly harms someone. Right?
