My Ideal Buju Banton Scenario

posted by on September 25 at 23:43 PM

A-19895-001.jpg

Buju Banton’s entourage rolls up in a huge, fancy RV Wed. afternoon. The gays who care swarm his vehicle. When Buju tries to enter Neumo’s, the gays who care bust through his security phalanx and smother Buju with hugs, kisses, caresses, gropes, etc. They kill him with kindness. And they don’t forget the KY jelly. They make Buju never forget how well loved he is in Seattle.

Oops! Buju Banton’s show has been canceled. Refunds at points of purchase.

POWER TO THE MOTHERFUCKIN' PEOPLE!

Let's not stop there, let's make our voices heard. Boycott KEXP, Sonic Boom, Easy Street Records, Everyday Music!

They cater to homophobic artists!

Let's shut them down!

I'll take the bait...

"Is The Stranger music editor advocating a sexual assault? Why that's no better than something Buju would say."

OK, the table's set. Run with it dip shit.

Are we done with this story yet? I hope so. BTW, if we boycott every controversial artist out there, who would tour in Seattle?? Just look at the talent coming in the next month. Many artists have controversial topics in their music. Let's get real people. That's the beauty of art and music. People can say and do whatever they want. We as the public can decide what we chose to listen to. No one is forcing any of us to attend these shows. Stop whining and grow up!

The Stranger's music editor is suggesting an overwhelming outpouring of physical love toward Buju. Honey > vinegar.

I can read and you ain't said shit slick to a can of oil. You bust through somebody's cadre of bodyguards and smother them with unsolicited and presumably unwanted sexual advances it's sexual assault.

Anyway, taking you at your lie, Honey vs. vinegar? You're a day late and a dollar short to win Buju over with love. Dude's cancelled as you point out. Save the honey for people who won't have jobs after another one or two of these Sranger Music Resource Commission activities.

Really, I don't think this is as complex or controversial as it is being made out to be--which is why I've stayed out of the debate, frankly. Neumo's can book whoever they want, period. The general public can protest that action however they (legally) see fit. And Buju would probably be much better off career-wise if he just apologized and/or stopped doing the song. Next subject, please.

Once again, Hannah is the voice of reason!!!!

Oh yes, let's forget about this as quickly as possible, right?

You cover Seattle's rock scene about as good as Kathleen Wilson's bad leg and Segal ain't fit to fill Maerz's coffee cup much less her shoes.

Regardless, you guys apparently make much better reporters than political activists.

Riiight. Now that Neumo's is $15k in the hole it's definitely time to relax.

Yeah, it's still up for debate whether or not chilax should have one l or two. I could go either way.

You know, upon reading the actual explanation as to why this show was cancelled, I'm actually feeling pretty conflicted about what's happened. Contrary to Hannah's thoughts, I think this is pretty complex. Yeah, everyone is free to do what they want and to exist in whatever capacity they want within our community. At the same time, I feel as if some form of censorship has occurred, whoever is responsible for it, and that kinda sucks. I also disagree with her on her point about Banton apologizing. I don't think he should have to apologize for anything he has said or done as an artist. While I myself love people of all shape, color and persuasion, I sure do support other peoples’ right to express their hatred within their art and speech. It sucks… but if this homophobic song were a point of contention all along, the show should have never been booked in the first place.

And Buju would probably be much better off career-wise if he just apologized and/or stopped doing the song.

Steve: I was saying it would be a wise career move to apologize or stop doing the song; I never said he had a moral imperative to do so--a distinct difference.
