Soul Jazz rarely, if ever, releases a dud. Problem is, the label's so prolific, you can go broke trying to keep up with its output.

If you're feeling Branca, you may also want to check out Ascension and Lesson No. 1, which Acute Records (a subsidiary of Car Park, www.carparkrecords.com) reissued in 2003 and 2004, respectively.

The other Branca release I have is Symphony No. 1 (Tonal Plexus). Jon Pareles describes it in the liners: "Branca investigates rock's archetypal E chord for resonances, overtones, echoes, implications, in a structure filled with inexorable drama."

I saw Branca & Co. perform this piece in Detroit around then, and it has proven to be the most powerful concert I've ever witnessed. I'd even haul out that adjective one should use perhaps only once in a lifetime with regard to music: apocalyptic.
