Morricone Score For Segal

posted by on October 14 at 9:27 AM

I just want to say that Dave Segal is a force of talent in music journalism and he steered The Stranger deftly through this year’s Bumbershoot, Decibel Festival, and Wooden Octopus Skull Pfestival and many memorable features were published. At this point I don’t want to think about what it means to lose Data Breaker. This is devastating news.

My posting this performance is probably in really poor taste. It’s meant to be both reverent and irreverent. I want to dedicate this post to Segal and all of his fans, who should be able to appreciate how appropriately this reflects the cognitive confusion of this whole Friday-the-13th situation.

Christopher Hong: I couldn’t have said it better.

So from the film “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,” a live performance of Ennio Morricone’s “The Ecstacy of Gold.”

Thanks Kathy. My ex is debating whether to join a spag-western band as their drummer. He bragged a few weeks ago that the veteran singer (former Gram Parsons tribute performer) describes it as, funnily enough, Dog Faced Hermans with the flair of Buck Owens. If he would only a own a computer, I'd tell him about your dedication.

"It was Segal’s design that this blog be about music."

With all due respect to Segal, that's not true. It was a collective editorial decision to start a music blog. I came up with the name "Line Out", but the idea was championed by many writers on staff.

eeps, Hannah, sorry about that. I certainly didn't mean to attribute it only to Dave and thereby detract from the hard work of other staffers.

For future readers: I edited the post and took out the statement about Line Out for accuracy's sake.

I'll miss Dave's writing. He know more about music than anyone I've ever seen, so it's sad to see that leave The Stranger (I also thank him for the opportunities he's given me).

And nice video. Seems a bit epic for the situation, but still, good stuff. Nice break from the stuff I've been listening to all day.

"Seems a bit epic for the situation"
I'm known for going over the top from time to time, but I think this little number served its purpose pretty well.

don't let the doorknob hit you on the way out, segal...

Personally, I won't miss Dave. Good writer. Not so good as the editor. Little by little, he was ruining the music section by getting so tunneled in on DJ/Electronica.

You little shit. A very talented and dedicated writer who was more passionate about music and knew more about it than almost anyone you'll ever meet in your entire life, and who covered types of music that were all but completely overlooked by The Stranger before his arrival, was just forced out by the paper that he did so much for and here you are spewing some trite, cliched, petulant little line that does nothing but kick a guy when he's down. Maybe you're not a fan of the types of music he wrote about, but why take a low shot like that? It's people like you who ruin public blogs. Do everyone here a favor and just shut the fuck up if you have nothing constructive to add to the conversation.

That really is an absurd statement. Although Dave Segal was the music editor, he was merely one of several music writers for the paper and his Data Breaker column was just one of several weekly columns in the music section (there's also an American column, a hip-hop column, a classical music column, and a jazz/avante column, in addition to the weekly feature article - which is rarely about an electronic music artist).

Sure, because of Dave's contributions the music section did start including more coverage of electronic music than before he was there, but going from almost non-existent coverage to a little coverage hardly constitues "getting so tunneled in on DJ/Electronica". But Dave didn't just write about elctronic music, as you would know if you really did read his articles. He also wrote about avant/experimental rock, hip-hop, funk, jazz, among many other styles and genres. By making such an absurd statment as the one you did in your post, you sound like a pathetic rock fascist who just can't tolerate coverage of (gasp) other kinds of music.

Dave was one of the best things that ever happened to The Stranger's music section and he will be greatly missed.

Yes, he will be greatly missed. The Day Of The Dead is in two weeks; let's continue the memorialization until then.

Dave was incredibly knowledgeable and supportive of all music. I saw him out at rock shows, hip hop shows and electronic shows alike. To all those making allegations about Dave covering too much electronic music I suggest you actually talk to the people that knew Dave and knew how diverse his tastes were. As a writer Dave is un-paralleled in Seattle. Terrible loss for sure.

Thank you Betty, for that beautiful eulogy. Next up to the pulpit, we'll have...hmmm...oh, another Betty, Betty Crock. It says here that Ms. Crock is speaking in place of the absent Ms. Keenan Martin. We realize that promotion is a busy "lifestyle", so please, let's all have some understanding.

what is there to read in the stranger now that dave is gone? i guess "i annonymous" can be funny a few times a year and "i love television" consistently gets me to chuckle but now i'll just feel even worse about picking up a copy of the stanger and wasting all that paper just to read a few paragraphs of marginally entertaining babble. good luck, dave and good luck "the stranger". you keep giving me less and less reason's to pick you up. :(

Dave Segal's quality writing, broad musical taste and insight brought me back to The Stranger. It is unfortunate that this situation was resolved the way it was.

In all truth, it was Dave's further involvement in the paper that brought me back to reading the Stranger after deciding mid-90's that it lacked scope and diversity and was too caught up in its own 'local scene' rut to connect the international music community/culture to our city of Seattle. Segal did this *not* by focusing in DJ/Electronic culture, but quality music in all its forms, be them post-rock, punk, indie, noise, jazz/improv, experimental, electronic, hip hop and dub/reggae - genres that would never have gotten that scope of press without Dave's initial involvement and furthermore by his promotion to music editor.

Irregarless of the particulars of the situation, and the business ethics involved, this is a loss, in no small way, to local culture as a whole that will not easily be reversed.

here's another theory:

dave got canned because he asked people for grateful dead concert recording recommendations in a somewhat recent line out posting.

* and this, over time, gnawed away at the stranger brass. *

in the posting, dave explained how he'd talked to some famous black electronic or DJ musician at the baltic room, and how this person had gone on and ON bout how absolutely kick ass the dead's "dicks picks" series is ...and dave professed to being nearly completely ignorant about the band's legendary track record (and also expressed surprise at a modern black musician being interested in their music)

if in charge of the stranger i would have canned him for this posting/explanation as well, but for an altogether different reason than expressing interest in "hippie " music...

i'd have canned him for NOT having any clue whatsoever that the grateful dead's "dick's picks" is arguably the best series* of concert recordings ever officially released by a "rock" band. it is inexcusable, IMNSHO, for a music editor of a major alt-weekly to not be hip to MUSIC 101 stuff of this sort...

;-)

*the dick's picks series is ongoing...

greg, i'd love another pot brownie, do you have any? and aren't you that bratty, long-winded ex-KEXP DJ? care to collaborate? i'll give you the publishing right to incessantly rant & rave away over one of my sweet long solos... in exchange for some spiked brownies. deal? just think... your naive hot air + my smokin' guitar would make a hell of a combo! whatever the case, rock on... dude... :-)
