Starry Eyed Surprise

I’m a little flabbergasted by this interview with Lily Allen that Pitchfork recently posted…
Scott Plagenhoef… what are you talking about? As someone who vehemently dislikes Lily Allen’s music, my distaste has nothing to do with her “nonchalance,” “impudence,” spitfire tongue or her “little patience for male sexual inadequacy.” It has everything to do with the fact that every song on her record sounds like that terrible Paul Oakenfold produced track, “Starry Eyed Surprise” (the rhythm from “LDN” sounds as if it were actually lifted from said Diet Coke anthem). Sure, everyone is entitled to their opinion of Allen’s dull, saccharine pop; that’s not the issue at hand. The problem – it’s so incredibly irritating when a music journalist attempts to blame an artist’s inadequacies on the public’s “misconceptions” and “prejudices.” Lumping Allen with those valiant female artists who actually utilize their spirit and wit to craft truly subversive music, I think, is really quite demeaning. In addition, simply attributing her male detractors’ critiques to a blight of male chauvinism, and then chastising them for not getting over their “male ego,” is equally as offensive. My aversion to Allen’s music is based solely on its generic quality and has nothing to do with her attitude.

Like you didn't see that one coming!?
Oh good, I thought I was the only one who wasn't really digging Lily. I fully agree. Bravo. Nice job Steve.
aww i love her.
Her music is super catchy. I flew down to San Francisco last month just to catch her live. And yes... she can sing. Anyway, here's a video that I took from that show. Sorry about the "shake" and "out-of-focus" here and there. It was completely sold-out show and shoulder to shoulder packed. Enjoy...
i thought most normal adults hated lily allen. god, she sucks ass. Is her name really lily allen? cause is way too fucking perfect for that sugar pop crap shit. has she hit puberty yet? or is she just pretending? i think she has no genitals at all. Michael jackson style.
I still don't see how one could be so vehemently opposed to someone like Lily Allen. I'm not much of a fan pesonally, but "flabbergasted"? Really? Because their opinion is different that yours? *Yawn...* At worst, her music seems harmless and inconsequential. So much so that I wouldn't have even made it to the end of your post if it didn't perfectly illustrate why I feel most negative music criticism is irrelevant. Other than cases where a reviewer is providing a dissenting view on a widely-held public opinion, what's the point of it all? Why not use the space to point out something that you think deserves to be heard?
Well, there's not so much a widely-held public opinion that I'm contesting. But I do disagree with the interviewer's points about Allen's male haters. My point: first to establish myself as a detractor, and then to point out my issue with the interviewer's perspective- that male critics dislike Allen because of her spunk. I don't dislike her because of her ideas and attitude; I dislike her because of her music. That was my point; although the post illustrates my dislike, that was not its focus. Her music is harmless- harmless, yet terrible, in my opinion. I was simply arguing that there are reasons other than male insecurity that would provoke a male critic to draft a negative review of Allen's music – arguing against the interviewer’s assertion.
