Just received some horrible news: legendary astral-jazz harpist/keyboardist Alice Coltrane has passed away.

I will post more about her awe-inspiring career later this weekend, provided I can escape from the deadline swamp in which I’m submerged.

If the eminently knowledgeable Chris DeLaurenti (or anyone else) wants to chime in, please do so.

RIP, Ms. Coltrane.

Heartbreaking news. Alice was one of the great originals. I often start my day by spinning her 1977 album Transcendence.

another seminal figure in music gone..reminds you/me of your/my own mortality..
a few years ago wire ran a cover story on her worth digging back up if i can figure out where my old mags are..anyways.. one of the points of the article had to do with a discussion of the blame that was placed on her being responsible for john coltrane breaking away from his bop persona and moving on to where he eventually ended up. it seems that jazz purists had the same regard for her as rock purists had for yoko ono. meaning that for a time she was vilified beyond recognition of her true lasting contribution to jazz.. and this in large part because she was a woman in a man's field .
a regally transcendent human being

If you're angering jazz purists, chances are you're doing something worthwhile and innovative.

Here's Pitchfork's brief Alice Coltrane obit.

Journey in Satchidananda. Play it now. Then Monastic Trio. And also the lesser-known album she did with Carlos Santana from his "Devadip" period ("Illuminations"?) is quite good.

Fuck, this is sad.

Damn. I've only started to skim the surface of her catalogue, but losing a musician as sublime as she is a tragedy of such gravity that even the casually informed can appreciate the loss.

if you're posting a pitchfork-penned obit regarding the death of someone such as alice coltrane then chances are that YOU'RE A F**CKIN WEASEL
