Fantastic Junk

posted by on January 24 at 12:36 PM

I am the proud new owner of a non-functioning record player. It’s been a while since I’ve had a long player hooked up to my stereo; I’m looking forward to going bargain bin vinyl diving once again, as well as being able to listen to this and this. But first I have to get the thing fixed. So, Sloggers, I ask you: where are the best places in the city to get old busted analog equipment up and running again? And how expensive is it?

There's a place up on the west side of Stone Way around 42nd-44th, red-and-white sign, name with three letters, maybe an acronym? I had mine worked on a few times there over the last decade and bought new needle cartridges. Depending on the seriousness of the problem, I'd say you are looking at 50-150 dollars.

J&M Phonographs, I think.

Uncle Meat. Now we're talking.

J&S Phono - that's on Roosevelt, just north of The Trading Musician, in that spot where Definitive Audio, The Landing, and the Sunlight Cafe are. If I'm wrong about the name, there is another joint in that same area - just walk around.

J & S Phono is on 65th across from the Bartell/Whole Foods complex - they'll take very, very good care of you!

[they're so nice to put their sticker on your turntable after they fix it. helps in moments like these.]

prepare to leave it there for at least a couple weeks. perhaps longer.

they're closed sundays [and i think mondays] and they close around 3 on saturdays - so plan accordingly.

J&S sold me a stylus for my 25+ yr old turntable. I brought it in, they installed it. Took 10 mins. I was thrilled! It's like new.

Agree completely that J&S is the place to go to get an old turntable repaired. Nearby is Hawthorne Stereo where they have a pretty good used room if you are interested in finding some older analog gear.

Platinum Records on Pike and Broadway is an authorized Technics repair station as well.
