Odetta Cancels
I was super-excited to see Odetta tonight at the Triple Door, but she’s reportedly very ill and can’t perform. This is the first show she’s cancelled in a decade (except for the time she broke her hip). Tomorrow’s show in Portland is cancelled too. Sad email in the jump.
bad news. ODETTA and her manager have cancelled tonight's show. Odetta is very ill. She is having to cancel tonight and tomorrow in Portland. She is very congested and very weak. She states that she can barely make it from the bed to the restroom. This coupled with her recent hip replacement is a tough combo. She is already 75% wheelchair bound. She arrived late last night from the east coast (her flight was delayed) and she's had this congestion for 5 to 7 days already. Both her and her manager thought that for sure it would have cleared up by now. But unfortunately it has gone the opposite way. Our girl Deby who works here is working as Odetta's handler while Odetta is in town. Deby said that last night Odetta was delirious and was asking the same questions over and over and asking where she was, etc. This morning Deby was with her too. Odetta was still very weak and still very ill.
I was hoping to salvage the show and get a doctor over to see Odetta in her hotel, but to no avail. She is far too sick to travel, let alone perform.
Odetta is 76 years in age. Oddly, her birthday is the same as Tina's! Her manager informed me that she has not cancelled a show in 10 years, except when she broke her hip. She is a very strong woman who takes care of herself and is still very with it.
We are hoping to reschedule as soon as possible.

Portland Town : Odetta DID preform tonight - Jan. 9 , 2007. Odetta was rolled out in her wheel chair just after show-time. Had a table next to her with a mug sized glass of water, cardboard box of tissue and white jar for used tissue. She worried her music stand would block some folks' view. Opened by having her many fans join her in singing . Went on to share stories and songs. Voice was great (as always) and her piano backup covered most of her coughs. After an hour ten minute set, closed with "... House in New Orleans to a Looong Heart and Soul Felt Standing Ovation.
THANK YOU, ODETTA
