??!! Seattle “Blipster” Speaks Out: “Not a Big Deal”

The dubious New York Times Style piece on “blipsters” begins with a quote from Seattle musician Douglas Martin, and now Martin responds to the NYT story:
so, i’m actually working on a piece on my band’s website about the whole article [apparently, if you found me, you know i was interviewed in it], but i’m willing to give you my take on it:i genuinely feel that there was no harm intended for the term “blipster.” it’s just a label, and i think that just because it’s race-related [the only topic in america that is still taboo], everyone wants to get up in arms about it. do aging hipsters get offended when they’re referred to as “indie yuppies” or “yupsters”?
i’m black and i like indie-rock, that’s not a big deal. i don’t feel like i’m changing the world or “fighting the good fight” or anything. i’m a black folk-singer who is actually listening to the decemberists as i type this. it’s just who i am.

Right, but Douglas, what about the premise of the piece? Which was: Hey everyone, we've just discovered this -- not all black people are the same.
i totally agree, and perhaps it was naive in that aspect. however, i think that the issue in question was harmless, and some of the other people being interviewed were stepping on pedestals and pretending that they were doing this huge thing for this unfairly-treated group of people. i just wanted to give my insight on this, and that's why i agreed to be interviewed. however, the editors took what i said and used it as the jumpoff point for us, like we're being oppressed by society.
i do agree with you, though. it's like, "news flash, there are black people that like indie rock." haha.
