Henrik Schwarz’s DJ Kicks Worth More Than Just a Download

Go buy Henrik Schwarz’s volume in the Studio !K7’s DJ Kicks mix series. I’d lost interest in the series once it started to get a bit spotty after the 17th release, but this release has forced me to revisit some of the more recent volumes to see what I’ve been missing.

If I recall correctly, Dave put this mix on his top-10 from 2006, and understandably so - it’s one of the best CDs I’ve heard in years, not just one of the best mixes. Schwarz manages to genre-hop without it feeling forced, paying homage to his musical roots and pushing things forward as well. Coldcut, Rob Hood, Drexciya, and Marvin Gaye on the same mix? Not only does it happen here, it works the whole way through. Plenty of people already know about this album, but for those of you that don’t, go pick up a copy. You won’t be disappointed.

One of my personal track highlights from the mix is Henrik Schwarz’s own “Imagination Limitation,” which can be downloaded here in non-vocal form (from a longer review).

Please, someone bring Henrik Schwarz to town.

there are a ton of wonderful Henrik Schwarz DJ sets available for free online. the DJ Kicks set is good, but there are others in the same vein, that are free, that blow this set out of the water. like Girl Talk, this mix wouldn't exist without Abelton Live. How about some praise for the software that makes it possible? The credit for this mix gets divide like this in my mind: 60% Abelton Live, 40% Schwarz's musical taste.

this is a great mix, but there are free Schwarz sets online that are better.

I love the program, but once again: Girl Talk doesn't use Ableton Live.

i've got no problem with ableton. people can do great things with it, and i'm more than happy to listen. the creation tools are interesting, but i'm more interested in the ends than the means (similarly i think carl craig used traktor to do his fabric mix, which i also enjoyed).

got any links to share? i'm always down to have my mind blown.

in the interest of link-sharing, here's an ame mix (from resident advisor's podcast): http://www.residentadvisor.net/audio/RA042_070124_ame-residentadvisor.net.mp3

Sort of off topic, but if you're looking for the best of the DJ Kick series, pick up the DJ Cam release. I never, ever get tired of this mix.
