Songs For the Dumped

posted by on February 20 at 11:05 AM

Dear Line Outers… you’re so awesome.

No, seriously.

About a week ago I got all emo for a brief moment, and asked for your help. And boy did you help. I needed some suggestions on what to listen to after being dumped, and your list included everything—there were very familiar favorites (Jawbreaker, Jawbox, Mirah, Alkaline Trio, Botch, the Cure), as well as worthy artists that I rarely (if ever) listen to (Strictly Ballroom, Sleater Kinney, Portishead, Brightblack Morning Light, Dystopia, and classical music).

So thank you.

I’m slowly trying to work my way through all the suggestions (to take the opportunity to get into some new music, and reintroduce myself to old favorites, if nothing else), but I haven’t even begun to crack it open. It’s been a nice distraction.

After thinking about it, though, I’m a little concerned that there wasn’t a single suggestion to crank up Kelly Clarkson’s “Since U Been Gone.” In hindsight, that seems like a pretty obvious choice… campy and ridiculous, yeah, but obvious.

In fact, there’s a not-the-best-recording of Ted Leo covering the tune posted on YouTube. I’m a big fan of TL, so even in its shoddiness, it made me smile.

I’m gonna go blast some Minor Threat now.

Are you really surprised that no Line Out commenters suggested Kelly Clarkson? Please include your thoughts on Dystopia when answering this question. Thank you.

haven't you learned anything from the suggestions? you don't have to listen to bad breakup music. please keep trudging through your new music selection until you no longer remember the name kelly clarkston.

I can't believe no one on the other thread mentioned the Velvet Underground-- "Who Loves the Sun," is disaffected disillusionment perfected. In general, VU's practiced indifference is a good option for someone trying to get over emotional upset.

In a similar vein, El Perro Del Mar shares some of the cold/crushed but poppy, dark but airy elements of the above.

Chin up, Megan.

Whenever I am in a relationship that is on the skids I listen to the Afghan Whigs - Gentlemen. However, it is a pretty dark album.

If you want to wallow and/ or feel worse, Red House Painters "Medcine Bottle."

If you want to feel better, Minor Threat.

You are doing the right thing.

@7: Rocky Votolato totally got me through my last break-up, good call. Pedro the Lion is normally what I listen to when I'm considering breaking up with someone; I'm not sure why there's a distinction.

One of my personal favorites when you get to the angry stage is "Hope It Felt Good" by Nikka Costa. Pissed off + Funky = goooooooood.

Xiu Xiu. It'll make you think about things, especially things that are much worse than being dumped. Also, try Chris Garneau. He just released his debut album (Music for Tourists) and it's wonderfully addictive and cathartic. Maybe a little wrist-slitty, but strangely affecting...
