The Arcade Fire Blow My Mind

posted by on February 22 at 14:43 PM

I like but do not love the Arcade Fire. I enjoyed Funeral, and I definitely think they’re a force for artistic good, but the passion that grips diehard Arcade Fire fans has largely passed me by. This may be because I’ve never seen them live, where they reportedly shine the brightest, and where they’re most likely to live up to my still-favorite description of the group (“the alternarock version of Rushmore’s Max Fischer Players”—Spin or Blender or something, 2005ish).

But last night I heard the song “(Antichrist Television Blues)” from the band’s forthcoming Neon Bible, and it freaked me out with pleasure. The music sounds likes the E Street Band with Moe Tucker on drums, and the vocal sound almost eerily similar to a young Bruce Springsteen. (E Street emulation—all the best bands are doing it!) It’s also the most full-blooded song I’ve ever heard from the Arcade Fire, and I can’t stop playing it.

When I can, maybe I’ll be able to listen to and form an opinion on the rest of the album, which I’ve heard described by my Stranger peers Megan Seling and Eric Grandy as “dark and scary” with upsetting segments where the band “yells at you in French.”

Those 2 bands and the Thermals put me on the fence on whether the Saturday of Sasquatch is worth $56. Seriously organizers, add some headliners.

Seriously? (Sound permitting) The Thermals and Arcade Fire are both fantastic live. And Arcade Fire at least have enough big spectacle to fill up a stage like that. Get them on at sunset and that shit will be magical.

Did anyone see Arcade Fire at Sasquatch 2005? They played mid-afternoon to a completely packed-out amphitheater, and the entire crowd was enthralled. Plus, that red-headed percussionist has a tendency to climb stage scaffolding and pound away. I agree with Eric, at sunset it would be magical.

Yeah, they're all good bands. I've seen 2 of them live, and I'd see them in town. But, seriously, whereTF is Radiohead or Sonic Youth?

I am not scared of French people! Okay, maybe a little. That's not the point. I'm listening to that first song right now, it's called "Black Mirror," and I stand by it being scary. It's totally creepy. It's a creepy and scary song. And yes, the dude starts yelling at me in French, which is something I almost never appreciate.

I think you're thinking of "de vos mamelons"

Wow, your first sentence *exactly* nails my feeling about AC as well. And I've seen them live, I did like them, really, but I just didn't love them like so many others do. Hope the new album pushes me past that line.

#4 - I was in the crowd at that Sasquatch 2005 performance, and they were incredible. That's when I was finally converted.

I love this band. I first saw them live at the kexp yule benefit a few years ago before I was all that familiar with them. I had started listening to them maybe two weeks before the show, aside from the radio hits kexp was playing constantly. I said then and I still stand by the fact that that show was the single most cathartic and spine-tingling show I've ever attended. It turned me into a devout believer. I was also at the Sasquatch show, which was good, but like all those before me agree, would have been totally amazing at dusk. Anyway, I've listened to the new album and I don't love it yet. He totally sounds like Bruce! Not that that's a bad thing, but I almost don't recognize his voice. His voice on funeral was one of the things that initially drew me into the album. I'm hoping that I will love Neon Bible as much as Funeral after I see them perform some of it live.

That KEXP Yule show was fucking fantastic. It totally converted me into a full-on lover of this band too.
