I guess I am the only obsessed Stranger reader young enough to like Setlist.
A Gun that Shoots Knives: “Every Year”
I have put off listening to this band. To me the name implies a screamy band. Happy to hear messy, catchy pop instead.
Gazebo of Destruction: “Desert Walk”
Not too fond of this sound recorded. I would probably lose my shit if I heard/saw them live though.
The Sea Navy: “Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived”
Like it, especially the drums. Catchy.
The Turn-Ons: “Strange as Snow”
Good for Sundays and long bus rides. I like the buildup from single guitar to living, breathing song like a single snowfake giving way to a shitstorm of snow. If snowing had a sound, this might be it.
The Feral Children: “Sympathy for the Drambuie”
Fairly unique tune. Makes me sorry that I have put off seeing this band. I assumed they'd sound something like Dreadful Children. I like DC but I figure one of them is enough. Note to self: stop judging bands by their names.
PBR Street Gang: “Neon Attack”
before: I am expecting Irish punk (Pogues, Meisce, etc.) and maybe it will be a Wages of Sin pirate style song too
after: Good, solid garage rock. I do not know much about the 60s, but this probably would have been a local band that I would have stalked had we both frequented the same clubs or house parties during that decade.
Note to self: reread note to self above.
Strait A Students: “Rushed”
Funny/stupid/catchy in the tradition of listenable pop/punk. I am sold.
The Kindness Kind: “Midnight Flights”
Not sure how I feel about the pleading, heartful vibe I am getting from the vocals. The music is fun and fine for dancing along though.
Schoolyard Heroes: “They Live”
I am a fan of the band's horror sound and lyrics. Great live performers. Too bad they are not playing this weekend. Nice closer for Setlist.
I wish I had more complaints about the songs this week or Setlist in general and did not come off as such a kissass and possibly a nerd. Unfortunately, this is a solid mix, and I work in a library.
Re: sound quailty.
Recording lesson #1: Don't get the recording engineer stoned.
Recording lesson #2: Don't let said stoned engineer rewire the patch bay.
