El Perro Del Mar @ Neumo’s

posted by on March 10 at 16:54 PM

Bummer of a night for El Perro Del Mar: Come all the way from Sweden to play to a crowd that’s not interested. Not faulting the crowd, because it was a birthday party after all, and people were there to celebrate. But the main room at Neumo’s was so loud with conversation that it was nearly impossible to hear Sarah Assbring’s voice. When it did slip through the noise, though, it sounded far richer and more confident than it does on her album, and it was a beautiful thing.

She started the set solo with acoustic guitar, strumming a song I didn’t recognize and, unfortunately, could hardly hear. Her three-piece band came out dressed in dapper suits and ties to play Rhodes, bass, and guitar, with one of them triggering drum loops and percussion. It might have been a great set but I couldn’t tell you. The room was simply too loud and her music too gentle and the night too incongruent to make for a good performance.

I got frustrated and left after five or six songs, so I didn’t stick around for the Saturday Knights, who I’m sure provided a raucous throwdown far more suited to the crowd and the occasion.

Speaking of raucous throwdowns, Misshapes at Last Supper Club was… well, let’s just say that last night felt like old times in downtown Fort Lauderdale, surrounded by spray-on tans, black button-down shirts, and expensive shoes. And it was fucking fun.

I just got the Saturday Knights EP today and it is bangin. They sound way grittier than Seattle's new wave of live hiphop bands (Big World Breaks, etc.). The red velvet on the CD sleeve is pretty smart too. Is anybody with me? Was their set tight? Did Neumo's sound suck?

That is too bad about the crowd and El Perro Del Mar. Mostly bad on the crowd though. No respect. These artists put a lot into their performances, and to have them not appreciated, well it is not good.

I wanted to go to the show just to see El Perro Del Mar, glad I did not!

I will withhold my comments about immature audiences, and too much drinking....

thanks for the review Jonathan

Yeah, it did seem like a weird bill, with such a quiet band sandwiched between raucous, upbeat party music. I happened to tune in to KEXP while EPDM were playing (and you could probably listen in the streaming archive to see what you missed), and it wasn't really doing much for me. Only heard the one or two songs, though.

I wish you would have stayed for the Saturday Nights, Jonathan, as they were On Fire. It was so much fun.

But I was really disappointed the crowd didn't mellow down for El Perro de Mar beforehand too -- they released one of my very favorite records last year, and beneath the roaring din of the crowd sounded just as divine.

You should have come downstairs and met Sarah, Jonathan; she's as gracious and friendly as she is talented. (Assuming you hadn't met her in person after doing the excellent article in last week's Stranger.)

Is her last name really "Assbring?" That I can respect.
