Opening the Halls of the Soul

What with Jesse Sykes’s pair of upcoming shows at the Tractor this weekend, we’ve got sultry chanteusery on the mind. And we’re not the only ones: Seattlest has an extended interview with Sykes posted today. It gets good when she starts slamming Pitchfork.

As a counterpoint, check out Trent Moorman’s surrealist reverie fanfic that’s out in this week’s Stranger. It’s strange and mythical and a totally different approach, just as—if not more—revealing than your usual artist profile.

I enjoyed Seattlest's candid interview. Trent's was painful.

Sorry. I wanted to know more about Jesse Sykes, and that article was more about Trent than anything.

I'll try and do better.

I like Liz's art for this. Good combination. The writing, the band, the piece. April Fools day. Should be good.

I love the inside / out there there approach.

I disagree w/ Whatevs completely. Get the stick out of your ass. It's called creativity and being different. There's been so much press about Jesse lately, if the Stranger had run an artist profile or a more traditional show preview, you would hated that too.

Dialogue, it's all I ask for.

We see it differently. No harm in that.

Anyone else enjoy the piece? Am I fuddy duddy who doesn't enjoy creative journalism or was that piece a creative fiction writer's wet dream projected on newsprint?

holy balls! Trent's dreamy portrait of Jesse Sykes was refreshing, I didn't want the fantasy to end. I'm ready for part II.

Yeah, I liked it. If you know Jesse's music, you see Trent dropping hints. He is modulating and interpreting and using metaphor. Cool piece.

Whatevs, are you a Jesse Sykes fan?

But you guys are myspace buddies, so your opinion is a bit compromised.

Tee-hee.

Have a good Friday.

"Surrealist reverie fanfic"? Trent are you 14 year old girl who collects unicorn statuettes and loves glitter? Did you write this piece with one of these fun pens? Did you compose it into one of these? Oh to be young and filled with pixie dust.

Sally Struthers, aren't you a Stranger employee, don't you work there? Nice that you're trying to cut down your own here. Trent's thing on Sykes really turns you that off? If you can't unhook your almighty taste for a 5 minute read, then you are an ultimately jaded biatch.

Read any good fiction lately? Oh, but there better not be any in my Stranger or I'm gonna slam it.

I googled Trent Moorman. The dude runs the original course of the marathon in Greece. What it is 26 miles? Yeah, he's a pussy. And his writing just sucks, that's why he won some "Poets and Writers New Millinium Writing Award." read it here.

I don't know maybe he is into glitter and unicorns, but let me see you run a marathon while having a fever. Win a national writing award for it. Then you can make fun of Trent.

Glo---No, I do not work at The Stranger. I haven't won any awards or run any marathons like Trent has, so I guess I wouldn't have what it takes to work there. I guess I'd better start cross training and take a creative writing 101 class immediately. I didn't realize that Trent ran a 26 mile marathon with a fever, wrote about it, and then he won a national writing award! JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! I had no idea! I guess I'll have to totally reevaluate my opinion on his Jesse Skyes piece now. If only I would've known he's a good runner and won an award writing about it beforehand. Guess I'd better start Googling writers before I make fun of them. At least run a marathon and win an award first. So Glo, are you Trent's girlfriend or just his stalker? By the way, here's a reading recommendation for you Glo. Enjoy.

Lighten up and have a sense of humor while you're at it as well.

This is entertaining. I thought the piece was different and great. Dare I say I had fun reading it?

Does anyone remember when the Stranger printed a mystery novel as one of their issues? It's been a while, I think it was a mystery. The entire issue was a piece of writing, in the format of the Stranger. It was so good. The only content was the writing, except for the ads I think.

Whatevs and Sally Struthers would have had hissies over that.

Sally Struthers sounds like an ass.

"Sally Struthers sounds like an ass."

No, Sally Struthers isn't an ass. She seems like a very nice lady. Here's a picture of her. Doesn't she look glamorous? I loved her in All In The Family. I doubt she would have "hissies" over The Stranger's writing experiments.

Your music coverage has been spotty at best since losing Maerz and now Segal. Face it, this is week tit at best.

The fact that you can't handle even the teensiest bit of criticism speaks volumes.
