Today on Sound Check, we are talking about Guitars. Behold, the holy axe, your stringed baby, the lemon that is squeezed until juice runs down your leg. I asked a few guitar players - What do you play and why?...

I rock a crappy red Samick I bought 12 years ago for around $200. It squeals, one of its pickups is held in with electrical tape, a couple frets toward the bottom of the neck are coming up, one of the knobs doesn't work, and the switch only sometimes works. It's been dropped many times, had a speaker fall on it, and had iced tea spilled all over it. But aside from all that, it's awesome. I think it sounds great and I'd never trade it in for a better guitar. I love it!

1995 Mexican Strat with 5 springs sucking the bridge down flat to the body. Rusted saddles, rusted poles. I have biohazard-like sweat. I once was offered $50 for it. Luckily I get to play it through a sweet old Twin. I love how a Strat caresses my beergut what with that thoughtfully scallopped back. WooDY HAGFY lives!

Comment by Master J

The main guitar I use in Evil Twin is a 1979 Yamaha SG2000. I picked it up last year at Trading Musician as soon as I saw it. I instantly recognized it as one of the guitars that Duran Duran used in the 'Girls on Film' video (Yeah, it was the unedited version). It's at least as heavy as a Les Paul, but with double cutaways similar to the 70's Ibanez Artist. Oh, I also use one of those - a '79 - as my backup. Poor thing doesn't see much action though, since the Yamaha is so solid and refuses to break strings...

I play a '56 Goldtop reissue Les Paul. The P-90 pickups sound like butter, and the woodgrain on the back of the body is beautiful. But mostly, the shiny gold lets people know that I won first place. U.S.E. rock by the way!

Comment by RJ from Sex Vid

I play a Gibson Sonex 180. Same guitar Dez played in Black Flag. That's really all I know about it. I think they are budget Gibsons from the late 70's early 80's.

It's pretty heavy, stays in tune, sounds great. I really dig it. Feels sturdy, I guess. I have dropped that thing, spilled stuff on it, still works.

Getting a new guitar is not something I want to do.

I don't know my best or worst guitar experience is/was. I seem to have pretty good luck with that thing. It's amps that I always fuck up. I guess my best experience was finding these cool psychedelic stickers to put on it. Made it sound better...

I play an Australian made guitar called, Fat Lady-1, made by Cole Clark.
The FL-1 is a solid timber dreadnought with carved top and back. It had a
solid rosewood bridge and fingerboard and sports a Dual input Acoustic Pick
up.

I've taken this guitar on numerous long haul flights.. and when I open up
the case, tune up it's form is unchangeable.. a trustworthy work-horse with a beautiful acoustic and onstage sound.

Comment by Mark from Gear Driver

My main guitar is a '74 American Strat with a DiMarzio high distortion humbucker in the lead spot. I like to get the "monster lead" sound.

I also have some other guitars and, although they look different, they're all usually set up very "Strat-like": vintage Strat style trem, thin neck, same intonation, same strings, and (although I haven't actually measured) I think all the necks are the same scale. Not coincidentally though, my backup guitar is a Strat that looks just like my main guitar (black on ash finish). It's nice that the guitars all feel the same when I play them.

#1 thing though, it's got to tune up and intonate true. I also say "you get me something made out of decent materials and I'll make it work".

Sorry I'm long-winded....
