Last Night The Blakes vs. Steaming Turds vs. French T-Shirts

Last night was another wildly successful Club Pop. Yacht did his incomparably spastic, enthusiastic thing, pausing only for a brief Q&A mid-set. The DJs, especially guest Marty Mar, kept things hot between acts. There was a mind-blowing revue between bands featuring some kids dressed as steaming turds and hungry flies belting out Paula Abdul (featuring Mc Skat Kat)’s “Opposites Attract” and TLC’s “No Scrubs.” Then there was the Blakes. The Blakes are just fine, but I don’t see anything too special about them. Their recorded songs are good but not great, and their set last night felt like a pastiche of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club’s leather jackets, the Lashes’ hair, and the Strokes’ bored posturing. But the kids liked them way more than the steaming turds.
Ari tells me they’re hot, but we know how she feels about boys with guitars. I don’t know if it makes me naive or jaded, but I’m kind of surprised that anyone’s still impressed by the leather jackets and shaggy hair. Shouldn’t the internets have disabused us of all our rock star mythologies/aesthetics by now?
Oh, but who am I to talk, when I’m so totally smitten with the glamour of So Me and Justice’s Parisian techno-hop t-shirt couture:

I would take a leather jacket over a designer t-shirt any day of the week. But I have a weird aversion to men looking like they care.
But, Aren't beards the new leather jacket anyways?
Leather beards are the new leather jackets.
shut up Ari Safari, Leather Jackets are way lamer then designer tees

I still like the unironic use of wallet-chains.
"Nobody's going to steal your bus pass."
Last night was a third-rate Gong Show until the Rolling Strokes saved the day. Bob (the Blakes' drummer)
Sorry, no offence meant toward the Club Pop guys. I know they generally put on hot shows.
Me again. That was the Commonwealth English spelling of the word "offense" and was therefore not incorrect. Thanks.
Their songs suck! Why doesn't anyone talk about that? The Libertines and Strokes did it WAY better. Anyone can put on a leather jacket, but only some people can write great melodies. I think they call them songwriters? So, where are the songs?
the blakes are great on record and okay live but, i could say the same for yacht. the dj's were great tho and so is that video!? thanks for posting that eric.
Yeah, the DJs were good. Okay, I take it all back: Yacht wasn't too bad and the shit costumes looked like some work was put into them. I was just in a bad mood after work yesterday.
eric gets +1 for his use of the term "the internets".
lolz.
Same old story coming from the same cookie cutter hipster-types. The second a band starts really coming up, regardless of their talent/"likeability"/performance ability, Seattle scenesters find the need to immediately distance themselves from it. Take, for instance, The Blakes. Here is a band that has worked their asses off for something like seven years. They have released numerous records BY THEMSELVES and are now being played in heavy rotation on the famed KEXP. Unlike many of the bands that hit this point, these boys can actually play and perform.
With the exception of Eric Grandy, were any of you people even there on Thursday (then again, I'm not taking his review seriously as he seems to predominantly write puff pieces concerning repetitive dance beats and requiring little talent)? I have bruises still healing from getting thrown into the stage monitors by the people dancing so hard they couldn't hold themselves up. There was a battle up front by two of Seattle's leading music photographers on who could get the better angle on Garnet's microphone antics, Snow's crowd reaching, and Bob's drum flair. I have seen them play in small bars to a handful of people as well as larger venues where it's too packed to move, and EVERY TIME the performance is energetic as well as fun. I can honestly say that I have never been disappointed shelling out a few bucks to go see The Blakes.
As for their music, I'm ashamed that I live in a city with people of such poor taste that they would bash a band with such an immense knowledge of music history and theory. Ask any one of The Blakes about their influences and WHY these influences are so terrific and they will talk your ear off. Bob has the greatest knowledge of music history in the U.S. and the U.K. of anyone I've ever talked to. They all know their stuff. With that, they've added wonderfully written lyrics and a bit more dirt plus their own edge. Unlike bands like Wolfmother that simply copy what was done in the past and only change the recording techniques, they are molding a new sound by learning from what was done before, not forgetting mistakes their predecessors have made, and creating a sound that's impossible not to move to.
And, for Christ's sake, lay off the leather jackets/hair/"bored posturing" bullshit. Everyone out there telling me they don't own at least one leather jacket? Everyone saying that they wouldn't worry about their hair when they're in front of a packed Club Pop? Everyone who went to the show forgetting the crowd interaction? BRMC, The Lashes, and The Strokes EMPLOY someone to make them look that good. They EMPLOY someone to tell them when it’s alright to mesh with the crowd. From what I saw, The Blakes seemed stoked to get drink tickets. So what if what they wear places them with the giants of dance rock (or whatever it is you'd like to deem this genre)? Get over it. Their appearance fits their music and, frankly, they make that shit look good.
The moral of the story is, The Blakes are helping to return Seattle to the nation's rock scene: a place we've been absent from for some time. Stop substituting your Prozac for nose powder—I know, it’s been a long winter—and try to remember it’s not necessary to bash a band for the sole reason that they’re making it bigger than your grunge band in high school or that they can outperform that Moog synth line/drum machine beat you’ve been creaming over. I'd take The Blakes, leather jackets and all, over one of your day-glow painted computer-hussy "band"s any day.
