Adult. vs Client

posted by on May 8 at 11:20 AM

This has bothered me for a while now, but it only occurred to me to post something about it after I got the new Client cd, Heartland in the mail. Here’s the cover art for that album:

Cropped (headless) women, stockinged legs, high heels. Hmmm, where have I seen that before?

Adult. released their first single, “Modern Romantics,” in 1998, featuring the iconic (and to Bitch Magazine divisive) photography of band member Nicola Kuperus:

Client released their first single and full-length five years later:

It would be bad enough if Client only jacked Kuperus’ visual aesthetic, but they also straight-up copy Resuscitation-era Adult.’s icy electro and dispassionate monotones. The facsimiles are of course duller than the originals, both in lyrical/musical content and in the cleverness of the artwork—Kuperus’ photos and lyrics depict intricate sociopathic withdrawal (with heels), whereas Client’s merely demonstrate said heels without the subtext.

Client fucking sucks, but I wish they had a period after their name. It'd be kinda funny?

Miss Kittin & the Hacker's First Album dropped in 2002...

actually...

how's this for nit-picking: the "modern romantics" single pictured here is the 2002 remix. the 1998 release came in a black sleeve with no photography. however kuperus' career as a fashion photog predates any of adult.'s releases.

i've never actually heard a client song nor seen an album cover, but the rip-off quotient here is staggering. how tacky!!!

the deceptively simple aesthetic of kuperus' photography (like monochromatic movie stills of women in hot shoes) simply cannot be duplicated. (miss kittin & the hacker's album cover was said to be a tribute to adult. and not a blatant rip off like client.)

Nicely done, Brandon. I couldn't find artwork for the original release, and assumed it had been the same. But you're the bus driver.

Hmmmm....very interesting. But wait, since the alt rock band "That Dog." had a period at the end of their name, wouldn't that imply that Adult. were ripping them off as well? Or was that just a tribute? And seeing as how those women on the Client covers are in fact Client and not just models, doesn't that change things a bit. I mean seeing as how there are three of them now, had they used head shots would you have accused them of ripping off Bananarama?
