The Best of Jarvis

Having been fortunate enough to see Pulp at Wembley Arena back in March 1996, I felt confident Jarvis Cocker would not disappoint live at the Showbox last night. His catalog as a solo artist may be modest thus far, but his showmanship is impeccable. Sure enough, he was in fine, flailing form (and compensated for the former with the inclusion of two kickass, vinyl-only b-sides, “Big Stuff” and “One Man Show”), right down to the sing-along “Running the World” and the squalling cover of “Purple Haze” that concluded the encore.

But what I’d forgotten about Jarvis, despite chatting with him just a couple weeks ago, is how incredibly funny his between-song banter is. Last night he regaled the throng with musing about shaving foam, working as a fishmonger, the Lusty Lady, the whereabouts of Las Vegas, and the dangers of air hockey. But my favorite bit came early, when he mentioned that he’d be reading about our rise in taxi fares in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer: “I didn’t know Intelligencer was a word.” Nice.

Anybody else care to share their personal highs (or lows) or lessons learned from last night’s Jarvis gig?

I also saw Pulp in '95 (in Chicago) and feared that this solo gig could never live up to that experience. To share a highlight from that show, somebody threw a pair of panties on stage with "I've got that taste in my mouth again" written in the crotch. Good ole Jarv picked them up and proceeded to smother his nose in them. =)

So, I chose to skip last night all together. Glad to hear he hasn't lost it, though...

The close of the main set was mind-blowing -- "Disney Time", "Tonight", and "Black Magic" ... can't remember the order, but damn ... a fantastic show.

I liked the dancing during "One Man Show." And the anti-air hockey speech was quite nice, too.

I first saw Pulp in Minneapolis in 1992 or so, around the time of "Do you remember the first time?" It was great. I was hooked. I saw them again in the UK on their final tour in the Thetford Forest outside of Cambridge. A group of friends went over for Wimbelton, decided to go to the show and I was convinced to join in. It was one of the highlights of my life - the insanity of it all (flying that far to see a show in a remote forest). Despite not playing any Pulp stuff, last night's show too me back to both of those nights...spanning 16 years. I was really happy and had a smile on my face the entire time. I find the new CD rather dull, but he really pulled it off live. I loved "Black Magic" and I was really impressed by "Purple Haze". It was a GREAT show.

Someone says, mid-show, "Cunts are still running the world!"

"I've heard that as well," Jarvis says.

Don't forget one of his finest touches, during that cover of Purple Haze:

"Excuse me *whilst* I kiss the sky!"

Thank you for that memory nugget. I caught that, too. Charming!

Decent set, though too many slow songs near the middle. My Lover said, "He's kind of like Mick Jagger," which was kind of like true.

Other than feeling incredibly lucky that Jarvis chose Seattle as a stop on his North American micro-tour, I was struck by how much better "Black Magic" was live. A really great show.
