um...the Glass Candy pre made poster looks like a crappy version of a Buzzcocks 7 inch sleeve. 1978 pop vs 1993 cheek. calculated? no, recycled. all their art is in the style of power pop/punk 7 inches from 78-82.

Glass Candy ahve been calculated recyclers since their beginning, BIT80s. Check their early live covers of "Johnny Are You Queer," their infatuation with glam/punk aesthetics of the 80s, or their current revival of Italo disco.

The point is that their appropriations are tasteful and, well, good. That poster is a comical turd. All it needs is stink lines wafting up from it.

Meh? Who goes to shows based on poster art?

I don't go to art galleries based on the artist's musical taste either.

i just wish they would stop the italio disco crap. i saw them in portland a few weeks ago and it was the most boring show i've ever seen them play.

To be fair, I think whomever designed the flyer was emulating the aesthetic of early 1980s hardcore flyers (a decent gallery here).
It has the same grossout imagery, and half-assed "I drew this when I got bored in homeroom" sort of look.

So, I guess as far as appropriateness goes, the designer got the right decade, but the wrong scene. He/she would probably have been better off copping the look of a flyer from Danceteria, which is a place that a band like Glass Candy would've played, back in the day.

i'm not a big fan of venues using pre-designed or pre-printed posters for shows, particularly when the show is a relatively small one. it seems lazy and boring.

i've always disliked those posters that are advanced to shows, with the obligatory space to sharpie in ticket prices and the other bands on the bill. yuck.

i'm sure not defending the comet poster, 'cuz it is pretty bad. but, still.

#8: What, nothing else related to bands can be mentioned on a music blog? In case you missed it, poster art has been an integral part of the music scene for about as long as there have been bands.

#10: No, I haven't missed the fact that poster art has been around for a long time. But honestly, do you not go to show of a band you already know and heard because you didn't like their poster art? The fact of the matter is this, you go or don't go to a show because of the music the band plays, not because of their poster art. Or maybe you are a huge douche like grandy and have no life and nothing better to do the critique things that have minimal impact. So A-train, sit and spin!
