Daisy Periscope, Down

posted by on July 6 at 11:32 AM

This coming Monday at Chop Suey, Sub Pop, and the People’s Rebublic of Komedy host the CD/DVD release party for Black Daisy’s Hardy Har Har Collection and Patton Oswalt’s Werewolves & Lollipops. 8 PM, 21+, Free.

Nu Metal never was old. Here is “Bearing Down on Me” by Seattle’s own Voltage Periscope:

Furthering the feature from this week’s Stranger, Black Daisy speaks and does some Q & A:

(Correction: In the feature it says the lyrics are, “All this time and pain, are bearing down on me.” When in fact, the lyrics are, “All this time and shame.”)

Black Daisy is the comedy duo of Troy Nelson and Cody Hurd. They are releasing a DVD called The Hardy Har Har Collection. Voltage Periscope is their nu metal band.

What were you all trying to do with Voltage Periscope?

Black Daisy: We were trying to bring back shitty rap metal. We had to write the song, record it properly, and film a somewhat realistic music video.

We needed the song to sound like those self-indulgent and over Pro-Toolsed bands like Linkin Park, Staind, etc. So we had Erik Blood of The Turn-Ons record and produce the song. Not that he’s into rap metal or anything, it’s because he’s great and produced one of our favorite local bands, the Lights. We knew he would make the song sound how it needed to be, and he delivered, as expected.

How is this DVD different from your first one? Writing? Filming? Gear?

With the first DVD, It was grab a video camera, A 12 pack of beer, and film. With this new DVD, It was grab a video camera, a 12 pack of more expensive beer, and film. And we actually had these DVD’s pressed.

How do you come up with your ideas?

One of the short films is about a demon and a God that have their own section of Heaven where they handle various types of fruit that are mistreated on Earth. Somehow the mistreated fruit ends up in our section of Heaven, and we do an educational video on how to properly handle fruit. When were thinking it up, I called Cody and said, “Hey, I found a demon mask on a fire hydrant by my house, (it had a note on it that said, ‘FREE’) find us some apples, oranges, and any fruit that looks like a giant cock!

In the evolutionary chain of Black Daisy, at what point did you think, "I should bust out my nuts here?"

Well this question must be directed at me, Troy, since Cody and I have agreed that my nuts dwarf his. My nuts do seem to come out often. At first, Cody thought that the lens of the camera was a magnet for my nuts.

How did all the filming go?

It's pretty much just us, so it's interesting to set up a scene, step in front of the camera, and hit the remote to start filming. We love when "film people" tell us, "hey, you guys have some pretty good camera work, or, "Hey, great use of angles." Then we know that this person must have had a double douche sandwich for lunch.

If you had to say what your influences are, what would they be? Other comedy acts? TV shows?

To us, most comedy is old and tired. Most comedy movies, stand-up comedians, and sit-coms, have been regurgitating the same "hardy har har" cheap shot humor for years. There are some comedians out there we like, like The Peoples Republic Of Komedy, who are based here in Seattle. The fucked up thing is, we think directors like Harmony Korine and David Lynch make the funniest movies. People don't realize that their films are deeply rooted in comedy.

When did you become Julio Iglesias fans?

Huh? We don’t watch baseball.

The music in the short films is pretty integral, right?

Yeah, all the bands on here are our favorite local bands. They are bands that saw the first DVD and liked it, so each band lent us a song. Bands like: The Lights, The Cops, Partman Parthorse, No-Fi Soul Rebellion, and more. Even Bill Rieflin (R.E.M., Ministry) let us use some of his music. He liked our first DVD quite a bit.

Do you enjoy Dot to Dots?

What to whats? What the hell is that? Like, when you draw lines from dot to dot? Or the chewy ass candy that stays in your teeth like cement?

What is the dumbest thing each of you has ever done in your life?

The dumbest thing Troy has ever done is slide out of a vagina. So since then, he’s been pretty fucked. Cody pukes a lot in public. Not from drinking or anything, but just when he sees really ugly people.

What is your favorite Hall & Oats song?

Actually, we love Hall & Oats. If you speed up their songs and add distorted guitars, they were actually pretty punk rock. And if anyone knows anything about true punk rock, it’s us. We were listening to Fall Out Boy way before anyone shopped at Hot Topic.

I like the DJ guy who doesn't really do anything, but attempt to be thuggishly dj'ish. Troy is amazing.

well other than whoever's nuts dwarf whoever's nuts reducing these guys to baby boy basement philosophers, the UTube clip made me really want to see them, nuts or no nuts.

Let's get one thing straight: When you hit post it will post.

It may look like it's frozen, but as the above will demonstrate, hitting post multiple times will result in multiple posts.

and these guys play with their balls for laughs?

No no, playing with your balls is new. It's state of the art entertainment. I don't think they really "play" with them. Like it says in the feature, they "brandish" them.

The video is very kick ass. Will V. Periscope be playing at the release party?

Saw the video back in April at the Blue Moon. Watch out for "Fruit Heaven!"

One of the bonus features on the DVD is a live performance by the Cinqo Beez from one of the most fun episodes of ComedyNight at The Mirabeau Room (RIP to both The Mirabeau & ComedyNight)--it was the show that Reggie Watts was the headlining performer.

The Beez just bumrushed the show from their seats in the audience--as it was being broadcast to the country--and both rocked the mics and dropped some science on the crowd.

...and that stool got a good humpin', too.

If ComedyNight was still around, we'd have booked Voltage Periscope as our musical guest in a heart beat, believe me.

Black Daisy are back. Vol II is sure to be fresh.

State of the art. Yes.

"Test Pattern" on the new DVD is miles ahead of everything else on it.
