I remember as a kid how I would take this song absurdly seriously -- as if Young was some sort of love slave, 'owned' by an uncaring-possibly-inimical person (perhaps it wasn't clear to Young himself how much so), and his 'journey-work' was ancient, as if he was doomed to try and find relational happiness from city to city, from forest to ocean, like a near-hopeless Cain cast from the gates of romance.
