Tony Wilson, Founder of Factory Records, Dead at 57

posted by on August 10 at 13:59 PM

Here’s a link to the BBC obituary.

And here’s a quote from said obit:

Wilson was a founder of Factory Records in the late 1970s, the label behind Joy Division, New Order and The Happy Mondays.
He continued to work in television even at the height of his work with Factory records.

In 1982, he set up The Hacienda nightclub, which became known as perhaps the most famous club in the world in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

It became the heart of the “Madchester” scene, playing host to bands such as New Order, The Smiths, The Stone Roses and Oasis.

Even Madonna played her first UK gig at the Whitworth Street club in February 1983.

Love him or hate him, he was a true music pioneer. The music of Factory Records changed my life forever. Plus, Tony's interviews were always some of the most interesting and entertaining.

RIP Tony Wilson, you will be missed.

Tony Wilson was one of those rare individuals who drags the world kicking and screaming into the modern. Factory wasn't just a record label; it was a paradigm shift. Fucking massive. He should have been knighted. Sorry to see you go, sir.

That spendy archival Factory book in all the Easy Boom shops should satisfy your sympathies. I'm waitin for the SPL version. Though I'd love to see a review TJ, and the reciept, and a photo of you carrying it down Broadway, and the story about the time we pretended shooting up in the Danceteria bathroom. Bright Lights Little City! Tonight! c u thennnnnnnnn

Also, at Conor Byrne later, Pufferfish is playing. I bought a nifty cd envelope from them a few weeks back at Tractor. I think a slog commentator has been sitting in with them since I saw em, will probably add a dynamic, esp during the wrought iron percussive song, cool stuff.
