From a commentary attributed to Sir Elton John in today’s The Sun:

Hopefully the next movement in music will tear down the internet. Let’s get out in the streets and march and protest instead of sitting at home and blogging. I do think it would be an incredible experiment to shut down the whole internet for five years and see what sort of art is produced over that span.

and

In the early Seventies there were at least ten albums released every week that were fantastic. Now you’re lucky to find ten albums a year of that quality.

Because when I think "lo-fi", of a man "out there, on the streets", I think of Elton John.

Fuck you Elton "there's too much technology available let's tear it down" John. You are without a doubt a talented musician, but you're also a product of a revolution of slick, overproduced, radio schlock, and have had access to more technology (of the era) and studio time than 95% of anyone performing today, or probably ever.

When he starts releasing vinyl only LP's to indepethe releases at venues charging less than $300 per ticket (THAT would be "getting out there"), I'll think maybe he's serious. Until then, he should enjoy the relative ease in which technology has afforded us to record an distribute music.

Oops, I think I deleted "independent" when I posted that. What else is new?

The first sentence is true. The second sentence is the ill-informed bitching of an old, out-of-touch grouch. You'd think he'd have a team of lackeys scouring teh whirled wyde webb for great music 24/7 to track down all the fantastic albums being made now.

He's so out of touch.
But you know, most people who actually remember music from the 70s probably feel that they are too, even if they won't admit it.

I like how he managed to get his point across: via the internet.

I've always hated his music. What a wank.

how about we turn the TV off for 5 years instead and see what happens...That would be much much more interesting

i have to say i agree with everything said here, except @ 6, and also add that there are great albums coming out every week and certainly more than 10 good albums a year, it's just very diluted. the reason for this, of course, can be traced directly back to the internet.

and wasn't it the 70s when elton put out his last good album.

@ 7 - i love the TV idea
