I have a friend who follows Young on tour. Apparently there's a whole community that does this.

Young seems to be consciously cultivating this Deadhead/Phishhead ultraloyal kind of audience by encouraging taping and varying his sets from night to night, and the "free album with ticket purchase" idea seems like an extension of this. It's an interesting answer to the "will downloading kill professional music?" hand-wringing we've heard so much of late (mostly from record labels.) His answer seems to be "not if I get to set the ticket prices."

Of course, it only really works for acts that emphasize live performance over studio efforts. It helps to have serious live chops.
