Upcoming Brad’s Back
posted by on October 4 at 15:16 PM

Just announced: Brad is re-uniting with most of its original lineup to play a pair of shows, one in New York on October 17 and another in Seattle on October 19. Singer Shawn Smith, guitarist Stone Gossard, and drummer Regan Hagar of the original band will be joined by Mike Berg filling in on bass.
The shows will benefit the Huntington’s Disease Society of America (HDSA), an organization Gossard has close ties to.
I wasn’t in Seattle in 1993 for Brad’s first go-round. Is this show something people are excited for? Is there a demand for a Brad comeback?
Two lines in the press release announcement for the show bother me:
The rich landscape of Seattle’s oft-cited and frequently misunderstood emerging music scene, circa 1993, provided a fertile ground for Brad’s soulful and funk-tinged rock to take root.
and
Fans can expect a family affair at this show, which will take place in the heart of the city’s still-thriving music community at Neumo’s, located at 925 E. Pike Street.
Do we have to convince anyone that Seattle’s music scene is “still thriving?” Doesn’t the reunion of a 15-year old band suggest otherwise?

I was in Minneapolis during the grunge years, so I gotta ask: Did anyone out here ever care about Brad? Seriously? Back home that was the disc entire used bins were made of.
I liked that album. "Buttercup" is a great song.
They played shows in 2000 and 2002, I believe, so they haven't been away as long as 1993.
JZ - are you implying the local scene isn't thriving? 'Cause anyone who's been around a minute, or traveled to other cities, could tell you it is. Weird comment.
And yes, lots of people cared about Brad and still do. Smith is definitely one of the best vocalists in rock, still.
For this i am stoked.. Be fun to see it all again! And yes Meinert, "Smith is definitely one of the best vocalists in rock, still." I always have fun playing any of his past projects for people who have not heard of him, they ALWAYS freak out over his voice.
not at all what i was saying, meinert. i live here, i can tell its thriving, as could anyone whos spent a weekend in seattle.
but i think attempts to prove that fact by citing the reunion of a 15-year-old band is backwards.
i was critiquing the intent of the press release, not seattle.
Cool JZ, just wondering. But don't take press releases too seriously, god knows the ones I write shouldn't be held to a high standard of sense making.
yo JZ - i think the point is this: seattle, like virtually every city of note, has always had a thriving music community, regardless of the music press. one of the hallmarks of early '90's seattle was the ridiculous amount of music media that focused on the "grunge scene."
and, like any music scene that gets a lot of attention, the media blew it up, quickly got tired, and moved on to the next city.
besides, that press release goes to everyone, not just seattle writers. you know the music scene is still thriving, meinert knows it, i know it, and so do the legions of folks living and participating in it. but, joe blow writing for a publication far removed from the 206 may not know it.
it will be a good show. shawn smith still kills it and everyone in the band is a talented musician. wear flannel.
