Smile for the (White Stripes’) Camera

posted by on October 19 at 15:54 PM

I can’t say I never learned anything from TMZ.com—the celeb-stalking website took a quick break from reporting on Britney’s every move, breath, and bowel movement to report on the White Stripes’ limited edition Meg + Jack Holga cameras.

Each kit is $180 a pop and there’s only 3,000 of ‘em out there. You can order them at the White Stripes’ website.

I guess that’s one way to offset the declining record sales…

These cameras are awesome, ordered them both. They're made by Lomo, I've got an older one. These are about the same price as regular ones but with tons of extras. The White Stripes always have fun and weird merchandise. They had the Inchaphone--which played 3 inch records they made especially for it, sewing kits, and 7 inch record carrying cases to new a few. I call this fun times.

Let's offset record sales by selling cameras that aren't digital, because many drug stores aren't developing film anymore. You'd think someone would have thought of this.

Those cameras are cheap plastic and run $30-$40 new. I can't see how they justify that inflated of price, what a total rip off.

Actually, the prices aren't really inflated. Sure, the cameras alone cost around $30-$40 but when you add up the price of everything that comes with them, it's damn close to what The White Stripes are charging. They may be made of cheap plastic but the pictures they create can't be duplicated by a fancy digital camera. Lomography is brilliant.

If you think I'm full of shit, take a look for yourselves: Meg's Diana and Jack's Holga.

I don't think the WS are selling these to offset records sales. I'm sure there are easier ways to do that than spend time designing and manufacturing cameras. Does anyone really think the White Stripes are worried about their income at this point in their career that they need to get into the camera biz?

Also, like Red Wendy above mentions, they take fantastic and unpredictable photos. Being made out of plastic or not isn't the point. Yeah, they're originally cheaply produced cameras, but there's a whole cult of people devoted to the wonky photo results. Kind of like using a Fisher Price pixel camera to make films. They're made out of cheap plastic and a toy as well...but they also make cool images.

Also, shut the fuck up.

According to Billboard, the White Stripes haven't even passed one million in record sales on their entire catalog.

Although the cameras arent great, they have so much style and are genuine collectors items. They are lovely looking and are just fun things to have. And the price works in ratios. I want a Canon Eos 40D but thats £900 just for the body yet its fantastic. This is £90 and a fantasia of fun. why bitch about the stripes? why cant you be nicer to them?(no pun meant by this)
