Here, #1:
The University of Oregon filed a motion to quash the RIAA subpoena because it is overbroad. The U of O's responsibilities under such a subpoena are to disclose information as it's kept in the regular course of business. The U of O does not possess the information sought (the identities of the student users) and would have to proactively investigate in order to produce this information. This is beyond their duty as proscribed in the rules under which the subpoena was issued.

Oregon's AG, Hardy Myers, is an old school law & order guy - which means he is not impressed by an overbroad subpoena that comes from the record industry. I'm sure it doesn't hurt that the President of the University of Oregon, Dave Frohnmeyer, is a former AG himself.
