The fairy godmother was Diana Dors, the British answer to the Hollywood blonde bombshells. She also appeared on the Sgt. Pepper cover and the cover to the Smiths' "Singles" compilation.
After ignoring them/him for decades, I had a major Ant renaissance this year, and this song was a major reason. All the singles are incredible.
Full disclosure: In 1981, I was interviewed by the daily newspaper in El Paso, Texas, about my status as a self-identified 13-year-old "Antperson." I had a custom made Adam and the Ants shirt, made of fuzzy iron-on letters, with the "D" backwards, of course.
And when I went to see him in concert, I used zinc oxide to paint a stripe across my face. This seemed wise.

hey #3 - not even close to 'ahead of his time'. the new romantic movement was nearly through by '81.
hey #6 - super listenable, fun to watch. i'd harass you about your ipod's 25 most-played, but then you'd post a worthless list of your favorite music which no one has any interest in.
@7 - As far as it being ahead of it's time, I was referring not to the New Romantic aspect but the primal sound of the antmusic, especially that intro. Apparently it brings to mind M.I.A. a quarter of a century later.
Also, the sync is off on ALL YouTube clips. Anyone know why this problem seems impossible to rectify?
And I'm actually interested in what rtm finds listenable as I've been listening to nothing but this song for the past week.
Adam Ant WAS ahead of his time. He was a prime mover in the New Romantics, and predates them as an artist. And his stuff is a lot cooler than most of the other unlistenable dreck of that group.
hey #9 - when 13 year olds in el paso are emulating adam and the ants to the extent of being interviewed by the local paper, you're 'movement' is done. antmusic and antpeople owe everything to malcolm mclaren. look it up.
and... please let's not start making 'what i'm listening to right now' posts, and DEFINITELY don't start asking others to do the same. is this really that kind of place?
@12:
Please avoid the disinformation! According to my research, Mr. McLaren's only contributions to Adam & the Ants consisted of suggesting the pirate visual motif, (admittedly a big part of their appeal) and toning down the Punk aspects of their music.
After that he absconded with the Ants, and transformed them into the much more pliable, bubblegum Bow WoW WoW.
For me personally, the draw was the songwring first, visuals second. And guess what? Malcom Mclaren doesn't have a songwriting credit on any of their albums. Hmm... Who owes who?
Ooohhh... and what do you think Dan posting videos of Steve & Edyie is? Nothing more than "what I'm listening to right now."
Why do think people come to Line Out?
WoW!
One of the best things to ever come out of New Wave...
Plus, who was that Fairey Godmother?
the beginning sounds like an MIA song.
Dude was definitely ahead of his time.

Also, Diana Dors gets a nice shout-out on the New York Dolls' second record, in either "Who are the Mystery Girls?" or "It's Too Late," I forget...
oh please. barely listenable, totally unwatchable.
lipsynching has sure come a long way.

Vindicated by Fnarf. Yes!
I, too, would like to know what rtm finds listenable.
C'mon. I promise not to be snarky!

@12: Maybe Schmader was ahead of his time.
