Eric Grandy, Music Editor

posted by on January 15 at 17:45 PM

Eric Grandy has just been promoted to music editor. He’s been a staff writer at The Stranger for more than a year, writing the weekly local music news column Fucking in the Streets, excellent profiles of local and national acts (Truckasaurus, MIA, Les Savy Fav—the list goes on), and editing special sections (the 2007 Bumbershoot guide, the oral history of the 500 block of East Pine Street). We’re really excited about where Eric is going to take the section.

Jonathan Zwickel, who has done fantastic writing for The Stranger in the last year—his gorgeous Cave Singers essay and his analysis of The Lonely H come to mind—is no longer on staff, although we hope he’ll still be a presence in the paper and on Line Out.

Hey Grandy, I got this great idea for a Van Halen piece I want to pitch to you. Let's do lunch!

I bet there aren't any meth-heads throwing soda cans at your head now!

The Stranger is lucky to have you, Eric. Good job!

i rep hard for grandy.

when the infamous "blipster" story came out in the new york times, before i could even wipe the sleep out of my eyes, grandy hit me up on myspace, asking for my opinion on the piece in which i was featured. now THAT'S dedication.

a well-deserved promotion, in my opinion.

Congrats Eric. When your not being a smug, self-righteous snob on this blog, you're actually writing some decent copy. I enjoy your enthusiasm in music.

JZ, as well. Curious why he is out, was it because he had the audacity to like Mountain Con? Van Halen? The shame.

yay ...no zwickel!

JZ will be sorely missed. Now it's all cool-hairdo children at the wheel... awesome. Suck it, Stranger.

Congrats, Grandy. Although I'm surprised at jz's (apparently) hasty departure. I'm guessing there's some good dirt on this changing of the guard, of which only the Seattle music cognoscente will likely be enlightened.

does this mean the music section will become 100% devoted to electro-rock?

this is tough

i really like zwickel: he's a great descriptive writer

but i also really like grandy: he's clearly been (and now is) the future of The Stranger

weird as it seems, i bet sticking up for mountain con played a role

Congratulations are in order. I'm sure that Eric will do a good job and I always appreciate his point of view, especially when I disagree with it. Eric's music knowledge and genuine passion are commendable. And, he's a real nice guy.

That said, what the fuck?! Clearly, there is a big juicy story here, because JZ has been doing a great job, particularly given his relatively "new" status in town.

I will miss his writing and hope to see his byline continue at The Stranger. I have my doubts, though, given the abrupt nature of this news.

You guys sure blow through Music Editors quickly. Eric is the third since the lovely and talented Jennifer Maerz left. What the hell is going on over there?

don't you love it when you get fired and you're former employer still expects you to contribute to the cause to save face? eric grandy as the music editor, REALLY? huh.

the real winner in this is people who like crap. they will be crapping in the streets.
those who like knowledge and insight? well, they are the losers, but they're used to that

Grandy's cool, don't get me wrong, but this is sad news cause JZ is the man. So what if he went to bat for things most of us don't like, who doesnt have some questionable taste? Zwickel is someone who knows you can't please everybody and gives well written and generally well thought-out criticism. My best to both JZ and Grandy.

I know it's been said, but I want to send good wishes to JZ, who was a good editor, good writer and nice guy. Obviously, Eric is a superb replacement, but it's sad to see someone leave who put so much effort into the job.

Apparently soft really is the new hard in Seattle.

Long live the Zwick!

Congrats Eric, I know you've put a lot of time and energy since becoming a staff writing for the Stranger. This promotion is well deserving.

Also, I want to send out my best wishes to JZ, he will be missed.

JZ, it's been a pleasure to write for you and get to know you. I wish you the fucking best.

Fits, it will be a pleasure to write for you, and have you hold me. I wish you the fucking best.

I'm sad and happy.

I'd be happy for you Eric but getting the music editor gig at The Stranger is apparently a fast-track to unemployment.

Looking forward to the Grandy era but I hope your bags are packed.

In a sincere and non-ass kissing way, love the both of ya and wish you the best, good luck! Obviously we don't know all the behind the scenes details and speculations get tiresome quick (let's not turn this into some kind of weird witch-hunt shall we?)

Best of luck, you both deserve all the praise you've gotten, and none of the flack that gets lobbed at you occasionally....you each have very unique perspectives yet a mutual commitment to the music community of Seattle, and Seattle could always use that type of diversity in opinion and talents in its press.

JZ you are fam. I personally thought you were doing a great job and was shocked by the news. You are a strong advocate for the local hip-hop community and the fact that you weren't tied into the small.town.with.a.big.ego.exclusive.cool.kids.club.
where.everyone.feels.entitled.to.something politics that is the Seattle Music Industry was refreshing.

Grandy - As a fellow OFH'r and long time advocate for our beloved All Ages scene, I am proud and excited that you were given this opportunity. Best of luck to you friend!

Congrats Eric! I'm stoked to have an advocate of the all-ages and DIY communities at the helm of the Stranger's music columns. For Kate / For The Kids!!

Damn! JZ brought a much needed tasty adult style to the paper and DARED to venture, at times, outside the always fashionable indie rock (gasp).
I really hope Seattle doesn't lose his talented and dedicated voice.

hmmmm...
This smells like a stinky backroom coup...Where is his farewell letter? Where is the we-really-do-wish-you-well party? C'mon Stranger, Seattle is growing up and you should too. JZ deserves more respect and his fans deserve more than one sentence on Line Out!

@ 41 I hear you. Never met JZ, but I enjoyed his work and appreciated his enthusiasm. And for the record, I still miss Dave Segal...but he landed on his feet soon enough, and I wish the same for Jonathan. @42 That made me laugh. While we're at it, how about There Will Be Blood...?

best of luck JZ! thanks for writing about Jer.... I'm sure it will never happen again at the stranger.
