Sia, Later

Thanks to Megan, Wikipedia, and a flurry of (mostly) insightful comments, we’ve got this Sia mystery all cleared up.

Sia sings in Zero 7, makers of stunningly mediocre car-commercial electronica.

Sia’s third solo record was released today on a label owned by a Seattle-based coffee giant that is not Seattle’s Best Coffee.

Sia has a potent, if strained, singing voice.

Sia’s music is potent, if strained, perfect for car commercials and coffee shops.

Sia’s most interesting moment is surely Four Tet’s remix of her song “Breathe Me.” Seriously—this is a phenomenal track. Sia’s album stuff comes across as too soft-edged and sweet, but Four Tet adds swelling luster and break-beaten drama as he stretches this song to its farthest limits. (Major hat tip to Line Out commenter blackandblue for the find.)

Sia’s original version of “Breathe Me” played at the end of a Six Feet Under episode as well as an internationally televised Victoria’s Secret fashion show.

Sia is from Australia and has a last name (Furler) and a godfather (Men at Work frontman Colin Hay [!!!]).

And that’s all there is to say about that.

really? you guys didn't know of her? you haven't seen zero 7 in seattle? one of the best sets two years ago at bumbershit? she's fucking unreal. her voice is something otherworldly. her first gig at crocodile two years ago was one of the most jaw dropping shows i have ever seen. she might be crazy, but that only makes her better. watch her live performance on kcrw. then make your snap judgements. again, line out is slow on the uptake. she's not new at all. it just happens that somebody got their shit together and put her on an actual label. who cares if it's hear music. at least people get to hear her now.

i hopped on the zero 7 train in 2003 or whenever that first album came out. saw them in san francisco at slims around that time and the show almost put me to sleep. i hopped off the train after that.

what you say is true, @1--im slow to uptake stuff im not into.

their performance at bumbershoot was incredible. zero 7's songs with jose gonzalez are really great.

zero7 have released three completely uneven albums and appeared on a zach braff related soundtrack (hood rich!), and yet i still like them. maybe the world of downtempo electronic music is so bad that anyone can release anything partially good and be at the top of the heap. herbert, i'm totally talking about you.

@6, herberts done some really interesting stuff though--way more so than zero 7. scale? a very, very good album.

i don't know, herbert compared to downtempo circa 2006 makes him look like he is god. herbert compared to downtempo circa 1996 though: mo wax, g-stone, and esl (to a lesser extent) in their prime? he's no competition.

Why did all the references to this being co-released by Starbucks get deleted? Am I confusingly reading the wrong post (again)?
