The Brother from a Big Country

posted by on January 23 at 12:15 PM

When we first saw Big Country’s video for “In A Big Country” (this was around 1983 in the capital of Zimbabwe, Harare) we were amazed by the brother in the band…
Picture%206.jpg What was he doing in this part of the world? How did he get there? A brother in the middle of the whitest (soulless) song by the whitest (soulless) band we had ever heard. The things a brother will do to survive.

thats Tony Butler, he was also in The Pretenders http://www.tonybutlermusic.co.uk/bio.htm , The drummer on that song is Mark Brzezicki, who is one of my favorite 80s drummers, he also played on that album "Love" by The Cult.

Yeah I can dig on the pomo/marxist college in the late 80's early 90's vibe you emit with the playful gadfly annoying a lot of people discourse. But now you want to hate on Big Country particularly the song "In a Big Country?!"

Come on!

From your writing I thought you'd find these lyrics poignant:

I thought that pain and truth were things that really mattered
But you can't stay here with every single hope you had shattered

I'm not expecting to grow flowers in the desert
But I can live and breathe and see the sun in wintertime

So take that look out of here, it doesn't fit you
Because it's happened doesn't mean you've been discarded

Pull up your head off the floor, come up screaming
Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted

Cry out for everything you ever might have wanted. Isn't that what you do in your posts buddy? Who is souless now?!?!

oh i should add that Brzezicki and Butler were one of the busiest and highly regarded session rhythm-sections throughout the 80s, their work can also be heard on Pete Townsend's early solo albums...they were known as Rhythm For Hire. Big Country was one of their more successful gigs, because of the song... "in a big country" which was a giant hit with huge drums, and guitars that sounded like bagpipes...

Michael Bland drums for Soul Asylum now. That should really rile Charlie up.

I saw Big Country live in 1983 and they were tremendous. They only had one record's worth of songs, and they played "In a Big Country" twice.

Also, my first and only girlfriend looked a whole bunch like lead singer Stuart.
