No, catboy, it's because this blog favors indie rock, electronica and hip hop, and isn't overly fond of metal. Which is how many of the readers like it, thus angst over the Croc closing and dismay that King Cobra is going to be a metal club, which actually was totally obvious from the start, despite the bs press releases they put out. So just deal with it or go somewhere else. Somewhere where your tedious juvenile grudge-holding underage metalhead whining about EG in particular and indie music in general might actually have an audience. Because that place isn't here.

How did Eric Grandy get pulled into this?
I was the person who had something Negative to say about the line up. Not Grandy.
I think it was a stretch to pull him in he wasnt talking shit.

I was just pointing out that I think the lineup is lame for a opening weekend! And i like Metal, but come on! that lineup is fuckin cheesy! Just like disheveled magazine was. Theres lots of great heavy bands in this town and on capitol hill, if they want that club to succeed as place to see shows the need to step up the overall taste level, their sticking to close to their old Kin Cora regulars taste. There was a reason that bar was empty a lot of the time.

Eric's post wasn't negative, and we really appreciate him giving us some virtual ink in the sandbox.

That said, I'm surprised at the "we don't like your kind" comment posted by RK. Dang, I've lived on Capitol Hill for the greater part of 20 years. I fell in love with this neighborhood as a teenager because it was THE place for the rock and punk types to hang out, in a neighborhood that celebrates diversity. Lighten up - it's rock and roll, not an Outsiders rumble scene between the Socs and Greasers. :)

Anyway, for the rest of your dissection, feel free to check out more of our upcoming calendar beyond the grand opening weekend. It's currently posted on our blog at www.kingcobraseattle.com.

FACT: It makes karmic sense for the King Cobra to give opening weekend shows to the bands who were patronizing Kinkora's back in the day. Who do you think gave the owner's the money for this fine club?

FACT: Eric Grandy has given more media attention and spotlight to A CLUB THAT FOCUSES ON MUSIC THAT HE HATES, then any writer for The Stranger ever, ever, has. What else can he do to show he wants to support the scene? Even if it might not be music that excites him? I still don't believe that Eric has written one negative word about the club.

FACT: There are actually quite a few hip-hop shows in the works at King Cobra. I'm trying to bring Yukmouth in there myself. The King Cobra is actually going to have a far more diverse music line-up than you think.

FACT: Disheveled magazine was the first magazine to highlight the Saturday Knights. How awesome is that?

THEORY: If I get to have my way, I would bring DJ Recess and the whole shameless crew in there and flex King Cobra's awesome sound system.

THEORY: I predict that the King Cobra is going to become "KING OF LOCAL MUSIC" in the club scene. And that's because they offer better deals on the venue than any club I've worked with. (Which is all of them.) They made Seattle Semi-Pro wrestling an offer they couldn't refuse, and successfully wooed them away from the Re-bar.

FACT: The King Cobra will be hosting Seattle Semi-Pro Wrestling's 5th year anniversary show. That nite happens to be one of the Re-bar's crown jewels. It's not going to be just "The Funhouse on the hill." (Which would be an awesome thing, btw.)

Hey, I don't care if you play metal and nothing but metal at King Cobra. The more live music venues in town, the better. But your first booker Jason claimed that the club would be "bringing in local and national acts of just about every variety, from hiphop to indie rock, and working with established local bookers to keep things diverse".

Hey Trent Morman-

My problem with Eric Grandy & The Stranger of late, is not just because of the whole KIng Cobra debacle that he started originally, but also due to not even mentioning or reporting on alot of shows that fall into the Rock/Psych/Garage/Punk/Metal, etc. categories to begin with. Shows at The Comet, and elsewhere as well. I'm talking for instance about about amazing psych bands booked by Mamma Casserole as one example, usually bands playing to a packed house. What did The Stranger have to say for one of those night's events listings? Nothing, and I don't mean just forgetting to mention that show, I mean the best they could come up with was to write: "blah blah blah blah..." or something like that from what I remember. Come on guys you can do better than that, and I know the event was submitted to the calendar listings in time. Is The Stranger trying to be Vice magazine now or something? WTF? I'm not just a fan of Rock oriented music, I like other types of music too, but I think the way in which Eric is demonstrating his biases(not the fact that he has them) is unprofessional, and not serving the communty's best interest.

So the rock and roll club is now the music "alternative." Sweet!

RK, you're referencing old news from a statement made before we even got a coat of paint up in the place. A more accurate summary was posted on this very blog in late January. Ahh, remember the fun of those 72 comments debating the club's booking prowess...

"What is also true is that there isn't a place like King Cobra on Capitol Hill, and we hope, and think, that we're putting together a club that will be a great home for rock and roll in the neighborhood. Mamma Casserole books amazing shows at The Comet but the room size is limited for bringing in national touring bands. Neumos & Chop Suey have thrived on their diversity, and that's great.

King Cobra wants to rock, and we will, focusing on supporting rock & roll...and punk, and metal, on both local and national levels. If that's not your thing, then cool - there's other places you can go...."

Now, let me get back to booking more shows for you to criticize. :)

"My problem with Eric Grandy & The Stranger of late... due to not even mentioning or reporting on alot of shows that fall into the Rock/Psych/Garage/Punk/Metal, etc. categories to begin with."

When has The Stranger ever covered these sub-genres of rock very much? For a while when Jennifer was music editor, sure, but that's about it. And that's because it was the music she loved. I don't think you should expect a publication to cover the music you love and be pissed when they don't. Start your own newspaper, magazine, zine, blog or try to get a job at the Stranger or Weekly and cover it yourself. That's DIY. That's in the true spirit of rock'n'roll.

Personally, I think y'all need to give a new club a chance to make it's own way AND stop whining about Grandy in every thread. I've been to King Cobra a few times and DJed there once, every time it's been packed and fun, so obviously there was room on the hill for a new rock'n'roll club. Shouldn't we be excited about a new locally owned venue in the wake of the Croc's closing and the two Showbox venues going corporate? Hell yes. And it's even better that this one kicks all kinds of ass.

Eric seams very biased towards the way he reviews certain types of music. He can't objectify beyond
his personal taste. To have him publish his opinions on rock music or venues is retarded because they get a thumbs down right out the gate. He has made his mind up before even experienced the event. He only needs to fill in the details. Unfortunately he tries to flex his viewpoint out of his comfort zone and by voicing his opinion he damages bands and venues. And yes he wears girls pants.

"Eric seams very biased towards the way he reviews certain types of music."

I can't believe I'm defending Grandy again, but when I was a music editor, I really had a hard time writing about indie rock and indie pop because I found 95% of it really boring. I wanted to cover the music I liked, real rock'n'roll like punk, stoner rock, hardcore, rockabilly, garage rock, etc. I don't think there is anything in the music editor rulebook that says you need to be objective. Objective writing, especially about music, usually is no fun to read. I want to read passion. Some of the best music writers in rock history were the most opinionated subjective bastards you'd ever meet, that's in part what made their writing so interesting. If I were to give any advice to Eric it would be don't write outside your comfort zone by trying to cover stuff you aren't interested in, because everyone knows it's half-assed. Instead be an editor, cultivate a talented group of writers that love the genres/scenes you don't (like I did with my man Lar when I was music editor for Tablet until The Stranger wooed him away). And fuck, in this town, throw a rock and you can't help but hit a rabid fan of heavy rock, punk, etc. that can write.

@48. losing atlas definitely was a bummer. but atlas was sending press releases to the stranger. that means they wanted coverage. and didn't someone representing atlas write in to the stranger absolving grandy of the situation?

as awesome as it was for someone to book all ages shows on the hill, i'm not even sure if atlas really warrants martyr status. i had friends' bands from out of town book shows there and roll up to the shop the day of only to have the staff say they knew nothing about them playing. And this wasn't an isolated incindent; it happened on at least two different nights that i know of. shortly after the whole Stranger debacle i went by the store to see if they'd put up a silk-screened poster for the Old Firehouse's 15 year anniversary show. the girl working at the counter said they no longer put up fliers in their window. a week later they had fliers for the Black Lips "secret" 21+ cha cha show. i'm not saying this to dish out more negativity in a forum that already seems to be more interested in tearing people down than giving people props, but because there are a handful of people out there that really seem more concerned with having a scapegoat than acknowledging that secret illegal shows can really only operate for so long, especially if they're not covering all their bases. but hey, good for atlas for trying. wish i'd been in town for that pissed jeans/tiny vipers show.

if everyone is so gung ho on the all ages scene, why aren't more people using the comment option to talk about the Fusion Cafe, Vera, the OFH, Seattle DIY, the Ground Zero, KTUB, or any of the houses and spaces doing cool shit instead of anonymously slagging someone for doing their job? if everyone is so concerned with what's NOT being talked about in the Stranger, why are they wasting their time here complaining about it instead of taking cues from Dan at 10things and operating their own blog?
