Last Night Famous As Houdini
posted by on March 4 at 11:54 AM

Last night I was helping my son with a poster for a book report about Harry Houdini.
I was telling him that at one point in time Houdini was probably the most famous entertainer in the world. Every new illusion he created was written up, on the front page, in nearly every newspaper on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean.
My son asked, “Who would be that famous today?”
The answer we came up with is after the jump.
Agree or Disagree? Who would you have said?

Michael Jordan was pretty big there for a while.
Snoop Dogg? Man, I don't know. Jay-Z?
Brangelina?
Harry Potter?
he also asked who the most famous person now is, and our answer was the queen of england, 'cause she's on, like, a third of the worlds money.
You're right, the Queen's pretty huge with the money.
Snoop has his own Cadillac though. The Snoop DeVille. They even have radio controlled Snoop DeVille's at Wal-Mart.
I could see Snoop on some money, like a $200 bill.
Up there with MJ:
Madonna
Mickey Mouse
(apparently it's all about the Ms)
It's kinda hard to draw an analogy between fame, then and now. I'm going to say there really isn't an equivalent.
I'm not sure what answer I'd give if a little kid pressed me on it. Today, pop stars are covered so ad nauseam, there's nothing to compare to the mystique of the Houdinis, Charles Lindberghs, or Jack Dempseys of the past.
Jordan probably is the closest thing I can think of...but is that "now"? Maybe Oprah?
Speaking of awesome, have you seen Lativa's Eurovision entry? It involves pirates.
