A Conversation I Just Had About the Beautiful Clarks While Walking Down the Street

posted by on April 24 at 11:42 AM

My friend: “Megan, have you heard the Beautiful Clarks?”

Me: “I’ve heard the name, I think I’ve heard a couple songs. I can’t remember…”

My friend: “You should check them out. At the last couple shows the singer wore a dress and army helmet onstage. He’s kind of crazy. But they’re good.”

Me: “What do they sound like? And why was he wearing a dress?”

My friend: “I dunno, I think he just wanted too. But they’re like… alt country/folk stuff maybe?”

Me: “And why the dress?”

My friend: “I have no idea.”

Here’s the Beautiful Clarks’ Billy Hatcher in that dress and army hat:

And here are some of their songs, that are good, but still don’t explain where the dress and/or army helmet come in:

“Sweet Gravel”

“What Kinda Fool”

“Laid Up”

So how about crediting photographers when you use their work?

how and why the beautiful clarks have fallen under the radar of the seattle music scene for this long is beyond me. i saw them the other night at the sunset tavern and was completely in awe of how good they were.

You would think a publication like the Stranger would have people writing for it who actually know about the music scene in Seattle. I was also very disturbed when I was reading an interview with the Fleet Foxes a couple of months ago, when the Stranger writer referred to Crystal Skulls as a "mellow electronic outfit." Did this person even take the time to find out anything about Crystal Skulls?!?!?!

...Come on. Do your research!!!!

Just to clarify that picture is of Caleb Sparks who plays guitar and is a long time friend of Billy Hatcher the lead singer.

Uhhhh...that's not Billy. This is not Seattle's best music blog moment. Sloppy sloppy. Douchy douchy.

That's not Billy, that's their current guitarist, Caleb. Their music is better in every way than that dress and helmet. Especially the singer (Billy), bass player (Chris), and drummer. (Who's leaving soon, sadly. You rock, dude.) Caleb sings a joke song every now and then and, frankly, it's the low part of the set. Otherwise, the Beautiful Clarks are solid, solid, solid. (How solid? That solid.) This is definitely a band that needs to blow up, stat. Well, after they ditch the dress and helmet.
