I know it’s old news, but I still can’t get over Common’s endorsement of the Lincoln Navigator…
One of the best and smartest rappers in the history of hiphop. One of the few rappers to shape the music into comprehensive philosophical and intellectual project. Indeed, Common was at one point (between 95 and 01) the mind of hiphop. For him to support this type of car in our times constitutes not only a betrayal but also exposes the fatal hole in his project: it could not connect the truths of the street with global truths. And street truths are useless if they are limited to the streets.
Says one commentator on this post:

but i admit i got a little sick when he was in those gap ads
i don't suggest trying to reconcile these ads with his albums. he doesn't rap about navigators and doesn't rap about gap. i think most rap fans see those ads and think "cool, common is getting paid" not "cool, i should buy a navigator"
finding forever was an excellent album, better than Be, just sequenced wrong so it came off boringer than it was

He's from the southside of Chicago. If he wants to drive a Navigator, let the man drive a navigator. Middle Eastern Genocide is not only a heavy handed and ignorant statement, it shows a lackadaisical dedication to your causes, which just so happen to be en vogue. Que Imagina, right? Is this more about a genuine care for the issues at hand, or for you to appease your political fashionista fanbase?
