the hold steady might not be the most inventive band from a musical perspective, and i can understand why some people might find craig finn's vocals less than soothing, but i can't really fathom how anyone can hear his lyrics and not appreciate their quality. i can't think of another singer who so effectively captures the essence of the awkward transition from youth into adulthood. if you don't like Boys and Girls in America, you're either too old to remember your twenties, you haven't yet reached your twenties, or you simply missed out on your twenties.

or you're like me with Hot Chip. you hear 30 seconds of their music, decide it's not your thing, and get really fuckin' annoyed that people keep talking about 'em.
