Song Ben Gibbard Sure Does Sing About Meaningless Sex A Lot

“Title Track” from We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes:
My memory cannot recall, a wave of alcohol
We shared a cigarette and shaved the hours off.
Lushing with the hallway concregation,
my best judgement signed its resignation.
I rushed this. We moved too fast, and tripped into the guestroom.
“Tiny Vessels” from Transatlanticism:
So one last touch and then you’ll go
And we’ll pretend that it meant something so much more
But it was vile, and it was cheap
And you are beautiful but you don’t mean a thing to me
“Someday You’ll Be Loved” from Plans:
You’ll be loved you’ll be loved
Like you never have known
The memories of me
Will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs
Like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved
“Pity and Fear” from Narrow Stairs:
I have such envy for the stranger lying next to me
Who awakes in the night and slips out into the pre-dawn light
With no words: a clean escape, no promises or messes made
And chalks it all up to a mistake
And perhaps…
“We Looked Like Giants” from Transatlanticism:
When every thursday I’d brave those mountain passes
And you’d skip your early classes
And we’d learn how our bodies worked.
God damn the black night with all it’s foul temptation
I become what I always hated
When I was with you then
Am I missing any?

God, what a sexist band. ECB is probably spinning in her grave.
Photobooth:
Well I lost track when those words were said,
you took the wheel and you steered us into my bed,
and soon we woke and I walked you home
and it was pretty clear that is was hardly love.
I don't really get a "meaningless sex" reading from either "We Looked Like Giants" or "Someday You'll Be Loved."
who cares? these guys are BOOOOORING.
nerd whiners can't sing about meaningless sex when all they write about is their goddamned FEELINGS. Somebody stick an old Prince album in that dude's iPod and tell him to try again.
mememe is right on the money: Death Cab For Cutie are complete and utter shit. And anyone who likes them is a total pussy.
@3 Yeah, I think "We Looked Like Giants" is a little bit of a stretch.
But "Someday You'll Be Loved," to me, is all about dude being with a girl all the while knowing he doesn't love her/can't love her.
There's more obvious references in "We Looked Like Giants," just after the part you quoted:
God damn the black night with all it's foul temptation
I become what I always hated
When I was with you then
We looked like giants in the back of my grey subcompact
Fumbling to make contact
As the others slept inside
And together there
In a shroud of frost, the mountain air
Began to pass from every pane of weathered glass
And I held you closer than anyone would ever get
Do you remember the JAMC?
And reading aloud from magazines
I don't know about you but I swear on my name they could smell it on me
I've never been too good with secrets.
Yeah. I've found that it's good policy never to trust a man who is a fan of Death Cab for Cutie. They're almost always self-indulgent assholes.
But maybe I'm stating the obvious... and apologies to the 5% of male Death Cab fans who just like whiny music.
Foos! Do you even listen to Death Cab? They're not whiny. Inspired. Focused. Orchestral. In touch. Solid. But not whiny.
You're missing out.
I don't know about you but I swear on my name they could smell it on me
I've never been too good with secrets.
i've always thought this was a top-ten gibbard couplet.
