Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band Sound Like This

Months ago Ari posted about a new local band Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band. They offered no music, only cryptic pictures of curtains and videos starring their tweenage drummer Marshall.

Here it is again, if you forgot:

And the latest:

Commenters weren’t sure what to make of the vauge offerings. Some bought it, some didn’t:

When are bands going to realize that this moribund, bored look in every promo pic is so outdone and ridiculous? REM on the cover of Spin comes to mind as well. So done w/ rock n roll media. The music is all we can depend on.

The music better be as pretentious as all this hype or i’m gonna lead myself over to the toilet again and cry friend cry… owe!

dude… I dig the curtains… and as far as the music goes i’m excited… i have no expectations yet i am completely intrigued so far. i just sense a lot of creative energy and to me that’s enough to get excited about.

Best my space promo of all time?

Now you can finally hear them; the Walrus has posted an MP3 from the band called “Who’s Asking.”

“Who’s Asking”

And let me drop some more knowledge: All the guys in the band (minus drummer Marshall, top right corner in the above promo shot) are ex-members of the defunct In Praise of Folly. Their first live show will be July 31st at Neumo’s with BOAT and “Awesome.”

And now you know.

Ooh, and the knowledge runs so deep when Stranger music editorialists hype a friend's band before they play note one. Thanks for the subtle reminder.

The only thing keeping me intrigued is that In Praise of Folly were so great.

Man, these MSHVB folks know how to work it!

Speaking of former In Praise of Folly members . . . Peter Verdoes is a) on the new Ball of Wax and b) playing the release show tonight at the Sunset.

So, yeah.

I'm not friends with them...I met Ben briefly when IPOF played the Vera years ago, which is how I knew he was even in this band and got interested in wtf they were up to, but if you are referring to me hyping my friends' bands, yer off da mark.

Well, Ari, perhaps you should tell us exactly why this is notable at all? You admit they had no music available, yet still felt like this was somehow important music news? Either you're an idiot, or something is fishy. Try looking at it from an outsiders perspective. Just sayin'...

'Cuz it's fuckin' weird, that's why. No big deal. Usually, when a band forms, they play some shows, record a record, and then promote the record...this band is doing it all backwards and turned around and it's interesting.

If I'm gonna promote my friends, I'm going to brag that these cool kids are my friends, obviously.

i appreciate the absurdity of their promos. i just wish the mp3 lived up to their self induced hype.

their one song, although sounds well done is pretty typical of what's already going on.

if you're gonna talk the talk... you better blow my fucking mind.

I'm pretty disappointed with the song. *Sigh* But that's what I get for falling in love with a band with no songs up!!!

But I still love the vids. And I like their attitude. I'm gonna say - GO MSHVB! You guys are cool.

In Praise of Folly? those dudes sucked!!!
this band sucks even more. I dont buy the whole "HEY EVERYONE! were goofy and cool and we dont care who KNOWS IT!" act. the music still suffers. greatly.

why not try making good music first, then go from there.

let the hating games begin.

IPOF was under appreciated. MSHVB has a good fucking song there. I will be at the show at the end July.

The only thing I don't like is the waiting.

The anger, where is all the anger coming from? In this case I would put my money on the obvious difference in caliber of what is produced in the listener by the hype and the actual music. We don't have a problem with bands in this damned town putting the same old shit down every once in a while for KEXP to cream over and the like. Just don't make it all out to be the greatest thing we've ever heard for the entire fucking year before your release. (pun intended)

I'm telling you, it just wasn't pretentious enough for what the promos hinted at.

Passive aggressive condemnations against the greater area (or the world for all we know) for taking part in homeostasis should end in a blood bath of sorts, new sounds, new ideas, new promises, not just "a lot of creative energy."

I use a lot of creative energy when I swear, doesn't mean I should call you first tell you about how wonderful my phrasing is compared to yours, make you wait for it, and then just call you a fucker. Wait, I guess that is a pretty good joke...
