Ryan Trudell of Truckasauras: Korg MS20

posted by on May 8 at 16:41 PM

Ryan Trudell of Truckasauras displays his new Ebay find – a Korg MS20 analog synthesizer. Machine and man have fallen for each other. Hand in duel-oscillator monophonic hand. The MS-20 is portable and patchable. Ryan likes it because you can run other things through it such as guitar, beats, or samples, and tweak them into next week:

Very cool!!! I run my keyboards/mics/guitars through a Yamaha FX70 effects unit... been doing this for about 12 years now. I love capturing the strange things that happen when you use the "wrong" gear for strange purposes. Miracles do happen!

There is a gentleman named Reek Havok, who does soundtracks for Vulcan Productions TV programs. When Bob Moog died, he ordered a Moog keyboard, signed by Bob Moog, off of Ebay. I, in the shipping department, demanded to see and touch it when it came in. That was an "old-fashioned keyboard" highlight in my relatively dim life.

I love that shit.

q: how much did this run you, if you don't mine me asking?

i was (briefly) in a band whose organizing member would play nothing but his bass through a heavily oscillating ms-20. due to the facts that the band had no stable drummer, there was no outside interest in their music, and the silver apples had done it a million times better already; it never left the house where most of the members lived (thankfully).

Great filter in that unit. Can be used to make everything sound a little better. If I could put the whole world through that filter I would only listen through it for the rest of my days. Ok maybe not all the time, but most of it.

I had to dump some money into it for repair, so when all was said and done it was roughly $1500. Not cheap by any means but I have no regrets. The filters are rich and lush, and when the resonance is peaked they have a real organic quality. We've been running the 808 through the pitch to CV converter which produces weird percussive bleeps and bloops that are quite nice.
