Insert Pun on “Reatard” Here

posted by on August 5 at 11:30 AM

Is Jay Reatard already on the fast track to an early burn-out? I laughed off the whole “punch a dude in the crowd” thing a few months back, but after reading some reports coming from his canceled gig at a 200-deep venue in Texas last night, I think the guy just might have a shot.

Starts innocently enough with the official report by Dallas’ Village Voice Media paper, hours before the show was to start:

According to [club co-owner Ben] Tapia, Reatard was far too inebriated to perform. “He stumbled out of [our club] with these two girls,” Tapia says. “I wouldn’t be surprised if he was passed out on their couches right now.” Adds Tapia: “His band is pissed.”

The guy who booked the gig had more to say on his own blog: Jay started the night off with a feud with an opening band from Texas. Then he threw a glass at that band in the green room, and then began pleading with club ownership to let in a girl he’d met “earlier that day on MySpace.” When asked for ID, she responded she didn’t have any, but to verify her age, she tried to insist that she worked at a local strip club. And then the pre-exit tantrum:

He is rich now and likes to remind people of that fact. My favorite quote by him: “You know how much money I have in the bank?” Actually, yes; $250,000 courtesy of Matador Records.

End with accusations of a 12-hour coke binge and a quest for $55 of LSD, stir, spill onto Internet, sip loudly. Good thing he kept his shit together at Block Party long enough to get on stage and, well, earn dat money.

Under-age groupies? Drugs? Temper tantrums?

Well, count me in as an even bigger Reatard fan now.

Only 12 hours of coke and $55 worth of acid? No cred.

We played with Reatard in Boise Idaho last year and had a hilarious MySpace altercation. We played about a 40 minute set and went about our evening. He never approached us at the bar.

This was in our myspace inbox after the show:

From: Jay Reatard
you guys totally harshed our collective mellows last night...
Next time jack off for an hour and a half on your own god damn time...eat shit

From: Us
You think we haven't seen your kind of horse shit before? Show up late, act like an asshole, insult everybody and wonder why the crowd left? You think it was YOUR time that was wasted? Fuck you, moron. Nobody even knew if your shitty band was going to show up. Grow up you fucking twerps.

From: Jay Reatard
I'll tell Andrew the GM at universal records about your turd of band next week Im sure it will be worth a laugh...
Now go smoke some more weed and go eat a potato and listen to yes you untalented ugly motherfuckers..

From: Us
Name dropping people who work at major labels is very punk rock. Greg Sage would be so proud.

hahahaha! You are a moron.

Not one original idea has ever or will ever spring from your testicle brain. Good luck with that, poseur.

From: Jay Reatard
wow seems like if you know about the wipers your band wouldnt be so fucking terrble . Cause ya soud more like incabus. Good luck with your " were to old to do shit but its still fun " band . Also you have the worst most over zelous drummer I have ever had the displeasure of watching..

[end transmission]

I'll admit it was pretty funny at the time. I'm up for a flame war. Whatever. He's got a schtick going. He's like G.G. Allin's butt baby or something. I can't believe Matador thought it was a good idea to give this tool money, or to be associated with him.

If this dude is going to do the whole, loose-cannon burn out punk rock type thing, then he should at least complete the cliche and off himself soon.

Early burn out? He's been doing this shit for over a decade, even if The Stranger just discovered him. Brian Foss was booking Jay down at Gibson's in the '90s and local record label Empty put out a couple of his records in the late '90s and first half of this decade. You can't really have "early burn out" with over a dozen albums and a decade of touring under your belt. And I think you would be hard pressed to say fighting, pissing off band members, throwing tantrums and getting completely wasted is something new to the guy. It's been his deal since the get go and to some extent is part of his appeal.

Oh sh*t a mile. How often does any and all of these things happen to any punk band on tour? Or ANY band, for that matter, on a touring spree?

Worst behaved I've ever seen was Mickey Avalon. Chop Suey. Famous WastedTM. Throwing things. Abusing manager. Falling down. "Doing things" with two Barely Legals in the Green Room - BL's that didn't even seem to notice, or care, that he was riding the Time Traveling Blackout Train straight into the Station. Choo choo! Later saw same BL's dragging him, unconscious, out the back door into the alley. His pants were unbuttoned and falling off. No underwear. His "thank you" tattoo splayed out on his groin under the orange glow of the street lights...

@9: I'd be happy to shit a mile, but that doesn't make Reatard's story any less funny. If these are common stories on punk tours, I want to read 'em all.

@8: Agree to some extent. But now that the dude's started to make mainstream headway, going on ego trips about his cash, he seems to be taking on a whole new flavor of spectacle.

Death to sweater rock!

Let's take drugs, have sex with under age girls and get wasted.

Dan,
you got that shit right. more power to Jay Reatard. just because the pitchfork crowd picked up on him doesn't mean he needs to be polite. isn't the sloppy danger account for at least half of his appeal?

Yes please, more stories about bands and bad behavior. I'd love to see a music gossip column in The Stranger again.

But then, I am a non-sweater-rock music dork.

People can't stop staring at the trainwreck - the broken twisted bodies.
Kind of like how when you have a rotten tooth in your mouth, your tongue keeps going over there. People mistake his antics for originality and talent, and he pulls this shit at virtually every stop. I think he really likes to google his own name and these blog posts just pander to his ego. This is not "news" by any stretch of the imagination, nor is it anything new or exciting. Just a childish, pig-brained dip shit with more mouth than talent.

It's like an episode of my show! It's not news, it's not "reality TV" - but people sure love watching white-trash dumbasses self-destruct. And they will pay good money for it.

I do however agree with "14" up there - a music gossip column in The Stranger would be welcomed.
