Line Out - Comments on Monotonix and the 4-Song Set

Everyone knew it. The Bumbershoot staff was visibly on edge at the very first note. The Israeli maniacs barely made it through four songs before security pulled the plug, hit the lights up, and demanded the crowd leave the Exhibition...

It was sad that it got pulled about 4 songs but what a great time. Word on the Bumbershoot street was that the fire marshal, rather than Bumbershoot iself, pulled the plug. Can anyone verify?

Ha. Just kidding. Seriously, though, now that they have a reputation, it's gonna be harder for them to pull off performances. It's illegal for bands to drink beer whole they stage -- something tells me setting fires is only slightly more against WASL regulations.

Dammit. That should say "drink beer while they are on stage." Makes more sense that way. Then again, if you've ever read the liquor board laws, it seems like everything is illegal.

Ami's hairy ass is my favorite Bumbershoot capture. There was no barricade to protect my precious camera gear or give me photo-op advantages, so I just dove into the crowd. I left wearing a lot of other people's sweat, it was fun. Best show ever, but I was sad they didn't light anything on fire. XOXO

That was the most magnificent 13 minutes of rock'n'roll mayhem I've ever had the privilege of witnessing in all of my 52 years on this pathetic planet. My guess is they pulled the plug when he pulled down his pants... we all know that in self-annointed "progressive" Seattle you can only do that at the gay-pride parade.

Comment by Zelbinian

What made that show so awesome is pretty much exactly what was written in the half-page preview in the Bumbershoot guide. It was what rock and roll is supposed to be about: chaos and mayhem for the betterment of all who witness it.

The best part was, when they told people to get out, no one - and I mean NO ONE - moved toward the exit. If anything, people moved closer to try and get an idea of why the show was stopping. Then a dissident chorus of "Let them play!" began and only quieted down once the lead singer said it was cool.

Also, I greatly enjoyed watching their reaction to what Dan Deacon managed to pull off on that same floor. Props to Deacon for giving props to them at the end of his set.

Hazel got shut down back in the early '90's. They had a random dancing guy on stage with them as part of the act. He was balancing a pitcher of water on his head, moment later the pitcher fell and landed all over one of the monitors. Stage manager was pissed and shut down the show.

Also TchKung! was permanently banned from playing Bumbershoot for having flaming oil cans among the crowd and "inciting a riot" when security tried to push people out venue after the band finished.

Fred wasnt a random member of Hzl in the 90's but a paid member of the band intended to look like a random fucked up dancer on stage. Fred was a miracle worker and kept the band together in many ways. I can see the resemblance in Monotonix

Comment by guy who worked it

The FireMarshall shut it down due to him throwing the garbage can in the crowd instead of handing it to somebody. No fire was set. No stage diving and the lead singer was very cool and talked to the crowd asking them to forgive them for messing up and go buy their stuff. And the band chatted with security and shook hands with many of the people working the event. Dan Deacon then made sure he did not repeat anything to get himself in trouble. The band knew the rules and accidentally broke one. It happens but rules are rules.

Bumbershoot is one of those events where there are tons of rules and tons of self-inflated people really into enforcing them. The Center has rules, One Reel has rules, security has rules, the Fire Marshall is there... it's like the ultimate example of bureaucracy and red tape, yet it's a music and arts festival. Tons of bands have been stopped or banned over the years, the rules at times seem almost arbitrary, and it seems worst in the Exhibition Hall. But I think most bands know the scoop going in and either tone down their behavior and pay the consequences for performing how they would in a club. I don't think Poison Idea or The Spits will be playing Bumbershoot again either... but four songs into a set because of a garbage can being passed around by the crowd is ridiculous.
