(Showbox at the Market) After all these years, there are still those who try to peg Laibach either as some sort of Euro-trash techno outfit, a fascism-obsessed industrial band, or merely a precursor to Rammstein. All of those judgments miss the mark, though, as Laibach always have something else up their sleeve, and generally speaking, they know something that you (and I) don’t. Their most recent album, Volk (Mute), is another deviant conceptual masterstroke from the elusive Slovenian collective. Consisting of electronic-symphonic renditions of various national anthems from around the globe (including our own), it offers a darkly hilarious swipe at issues involving nationalism, patriotism, and warmongering. A vintage Laibach statement, it’s also a pretty stirring listen despite all of the contradictions and ironies at work. WILLIAM YORK
