Why I Don’t Let Myself Have Cable Television

posted by on September 8 at 21:00 PM

Did anyone else see the VMAs last night? It was bizarre. It was like they were holding it in a high school gymnasium. Instead of having thousands of people screaming at Radio City Music Hall there were maybe a couple hundred LA elites in folding chairs. Unfortunately I only got to see a small nibble Ė specifically Paramore performing at the Whiskey a Go-Go. I missed their set at Bumbershoot because of those mustachioed gentlemen in the video below, and because I didn’t care, but Iíve heard their single on The End a million times at work and I cannot deny its catchiness. MTV has become such a strange beast. Nothing on that channel makes any sense to me anymore. I would have liked to have seen the whole show, as it was an intriguing disaster, but I had to go to a party at another house without cable, and I havenít had cable for years (I was watching it at a friendís), so now I may never fully experience the depressed pecuniary rock renaissance that were this yearís Video Music Awards, unless I download it, which I probably wont. Iím way too far out of that loop now - Iíve ignored it for long enough that the flashing lights and unfamiliar words are startling and confusing, like an elderly person trying to figure out how to internet. MTVís misguided youthful vitality has accelerated my perception of mortality; my bones are filled with a newfound curmudgeoning. 10 minutes of VMAs and I became a doddering old man.

Paramore didn't play the Whiskey as was promoted. They faked everyone out including myself when the lights came on at the event and they were there instead lol. Their tune is rather catchy.

Kanye closed the show with a new song that was very different from his usual style. It could be a hit but who knows.

Kirby, the world is a better place without cable. Do not corrupt yourself.

It was definietly odd. MTV is back to no budget, but this time it's a 24hr corporate sponsorship channel. I was laughing at Fall Out Boy's Michael Jackson re-make - not only is it a musical shitload, but AFI did the same thing with Smooth Criminal far better and 7 years ago.

Strangely VH1 didn't have a show on and was just a teaser for the VMA show one door over. I'm starting to think it's not calculated chaos on those channels. I think they're actually not getting money from Viacom anymore. VH1 had some crappy non-music related movie on the other night instead of 'I Love Money.'
